Singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth a tiny blonde in jeans, white turtleneck, boots and a Prof. Henry Higgins hat and I sat in the window of the coffee shop on Broad way at West 70th Street, talking away the morning without ever ordering a single cup. And we had plenty to talk about. The Tony-winning Broadway star is on The West Wing, she's shooting a new flick with Annette Bening and has two big summer films. She also has a new album, As I Am, which she spoke about with obvious passion. "It's inspirational, with country and pop," she told me. "Ever since 911-which was the event of our lives, especially for those of us who were here in New York I wanted to do something different. You know, I'm classically trained as an opera singer, but I grew up singing gospel." In addition to her music, Chenoweth is in Bewitched, due out June 24. It's a film adaptation of the old TV series, and it stars Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell and Shirley MacLaine. Kristin plays Kidman's neighbor. She's also in The Pink Panther, due out Aug. S, as a "sexy French PR executive" opposite Steve Martin, Kevin Kline and Beyond Knowles. Did they shoot in Paris? "Not my scenes," she said. "I did them here." "What a shame," I replied. "Well," said the very cool Kristin, "I'm supposed to do Candide at a Paris opera house in 2008. So I could be there after all." , ; J' V - - , - I Bom July 24, 1968, In Broken Arrow, Okla. Single. Despite her busy schedule, Chenoweth made time for a role on The West Wing as a White House media consultant. How did she land that? "I got a call," she said. "Nobody was more surprised than me. I did a test-an audition, really. It's very fast-paced, with a lot ofdialogucThatshowisnoteasytodo." IE James Brady's latest book, "The Scariest Place in the World: A Marine Returns to North Korea " (St. Martin's Press), is now in bookstores. Kristin Chenoweth is from Broken Arrow, Okla., which despite its name, redolent of the Old West she said is "a suburb of Tulsa." After receiving a master's in opera performance, Chenoweth was sidetracked by theater. That led her to Broadway and a Tony in 1999 as Sally in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. (She was nominated again last year, for Wicked.) How did that first award affect her career? "My whole life changed," she told me. "The phone rang for two days.
