Dear Heloise: We are no longer saving our lovely dining room for just special occasions, but have our evening meal there every day now! Wanting to keep the velvet covered chairs from becoming too soiled, I remembered some bath towels I had.

Using six matching bath towels (they can be purchased to match the color scheme of the dining area), I fashioned some pretty chair covers. The height of the chair back determines the length of the towel to be used. Turn back about five or six inches on one end of the towel. By stitching this turned down part on both sides, it forms a pocket to fit over the top of the chair back. Where the back of the chair seat starts, fasten elastic across the back to the other side of the towel.

Let the remaining towel fall over the front of the seat. Because the terry towel sort of clings to the velvet, the covers really stay in place. When soiled they can be easily removed, laundered and put right back on. No ironing! Enid Dear Heloise: My two boys are seven years apart in age. The older one outgrew some of the toys he had.

Because they were still too advanced for the baby, they were put away. When the baby was old enough to enjoy these toys, I put them in good shape with a bit of soap and water. Small children do not examine for newness, so the toys were thoroughly enjoyed the second time around with no expense at all. Muriel Angelillt Dear Heloise: Just a note from a daily reader- Hair spray does absolutely nothing for cake pans and, likewise, the vegetable shortening spray does nothing for your hairdo! I know! I've tried them both within the last two weeks. Unfortunately, I did keep them both on the same kitchen cupboard shelf.

I've learned better now. Just thought Id let you know so you wouldn't bother "testing." Jo T. Dear Heloise: I think most mothers with young babies greatly appreciate disposable diapers. However, if you use them all the time, a double diaper at night or for shopping trips can be a trick. My solution is to take two disposable diapers and remove the plastic from one.

Then fold the diaper without the plastic in half lengthwise, and place it between the plastic and liner of the other diaper. It stays put and works great. Bunny Heloise: I do some drawings and oil paintings, but found it rather expensive to buy frames for all of them. So I dug out some old pictures I had stored away and took out the cardboard backing. Then I cut a piece of old sheeting to fit the cardboard backing and starched it with spray starch, and with my iron turned to "medium ironed it on the cardboard backing.

After this little chore was completed, I placed my painting or drawing on the white background and then put it in the frame. It really made lovely pictures and the white sheet matting is beautiful.
