Arant, McKissick, Smith star Bakers defeat Monroe Slaff Photo by Mitch Arlff Bakers' Smith fouls one off before connecting for single LELAND-The Leland Bakers, behind the i i of righthanders Gary McKissick and Hugh Arant and the hitting of Frank Smith, defeated the Monroe (La.) Sports, 4-2 and 4-0, in a semi-pro twin-bill here Sunday at Baker Field. In a Saturday night contest, the Bakers were blanked 2-0 by the Yazoo City Independents. Coach Gary Dempsey's Bakers are now 7-5 on the season while Monroe's mark fell to 7-7. Yazoo's record is unavailable. McKissick gave up 12 hits in the Sunday opener in picking up his second win against as many defeats.

Both runs were earned. He struck out three and did not walk a batter in going the route. The Bakers managed seven hits and three earned runs off loser Charles Rousell. Rousell walked one and struck out five in going the distance. Frank Smith, former Greenville High star shortstop but now a Rollins (Fla.) College baseballer, belted a 340-foot homer as well as a single to pace the Bakers at the plate.

He, in addition, drove in three of his team's four runs. The Sports tallied a single run in the first, but the Bakers came back in the bottom half to knot the score. Ted Thornton reached on a error and so did Tommy Mims. Thornton got picked off before Butch Inmon hit a grounder which was mishandled by the Sports in trying to get Mims at second--all hands were safe. Smith then plated Mims with a single to left.

In the third, Thornton belted a base hit, stole second and scored on Mims' single. Smith then belted his homer. The Sports' Jackie Akins cracked a solo shot over the left field wall to end scoring in the contest. Akins wen' four-for-four in the game and teammates Wally McMakin and Tommy Huff had two hits apiece. Arant worked five and two-third innings in the second contest, giving way to McKissick who hurled the final inning and a third.

Arant allowed only three hits, while walking five and striking out four. McKissick, who entered the game with the bases loaded, gave up only one hit (no walks or strikeouts). Yazoo's Bill Smith and Wally McMakin gave up five hits, while walking seven and striking out four in the nightcap. Catcher Homer Ballard paced the Bakers with two hits in three trips. Fischer faces Tuesday deadline REYKJAVIK, Iceland (UPI) --Bobby Fischer's time runs out at 8 a.m.

EDT Tuesday. Fischer, the 29-year-old Brooklyn chess genius, must turn up in Reykjavik by then or lose the right to challenge Soviet titleholder Boris Spassky for the world championship, a match that has generated wider interest than any chess game in history. Fischer, apparently bargaining for more money, was hiding out in New York while the great debate of "will he show up or won't he?" raged. The 24-game series was to have started Sunday. But when Fischer didn't show the president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Dr.

Max Euwe, announced that he was postponing the deadline until noon Tuesday (8 a.m. EDT). If Fischer does not appear for the drawing of lots scheduled for that time, he will be disqualified and lose his right to challenge the 35-year-old Russian for the world chess title. An Icelandic friend of Fischer, Freystrinn Thorberbergsson, flew to New York Sunday to try to persuade the American grand master to return with him. He said he was acting as "a friend of Bobby Fischer" and said only "I know where to find him." He refused to answer other questions.

Fischer, who has kept the Icelandic organizers nervously rushing to Keflavik international airport to meet every flight from New York for a week, simply did not show up Sunday. Officially there was no explanation. He has not been in touch with the Icelandic Chess Federation or FIDE since he sent a cable through the U.S. Chess Federation some time back saying he would show up for the match "under protest." Four times since then, Fischer has canceled bookings on flights to Iceland. The Icelandic federation, which stands to lose much money if the match does not come off, pleaded for Fischer Sunday and convinced Euwe to postpone the start of the match 48 hours to give Fischer a last chance.

"But I am not very hopeful," said Euwe, the last non-Russian to hold the world title from 1935 to 1937. He is Dutch. The decision came after several rounds of closed negotiations involving Spassky, Euwe, the Icelandic organizers and Americans representing Fischer but not authorized by him to negotiate. Spassky appeared undisturbed by the crisis surrounding his first defense of the title he won in 1969 from fellow countryman Tigran Petrosian. He was calm and relaxed in Sunday's negotiations and his seconds said he was in fine spirits.

The total prize money ot than ten times bigger than any before in the history of chess--will be split with five-eights to the winner and the rest to the loser. On top of this the two players are guaranteed 30 per cent of net incomes on televisions and film rights. But Fischer wants more. He has asked the Icelandic organizers for a 30 per cent share of the gate receipts--something which in the words of Icelandic Chess Federation president Gudmundur Thorarinsson would spell "economic disaster" for the tiny federation in a nation of only 200,000 inhabitants. Earning million Riva Ridge step closer By United Press International Riva Ridge took a step closer to becoming the llth million dollar earner in thoroughbred history Saturday as he continued his domination of the nation's three year olds with a half-length victory in the $109,900 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park.

The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner withstood a late stretch bid by Bicker, who finished second, with Finalista third. Riva Ridge's victory was worth $59,900 to Mrs. Helen Tweedy's Meadow Stable, which bred the son of First Landing in Kentucky, and increased his lifetime earnings to $862,150, the most earned by any thoroughbred still in active competition. Riva Ridge carried 129 pounds in the race and, as the 4-5 favorite of the nearly 45,000 bettors, returned $2.20, $3.00 and $2.20. Riva Ridge swept through the 1 4 mile distance in the exceptional time of 1:59 35, just a fifth of a second off the stakes record set in 1956 by Count of Honor.

Droll Role came on with a strong rush in the stretch Sunday to capture the $116,800 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs by three lengths over Hitchcock. Droll Role ran the 1 mile race in 1:49 1-5, a second slower than the track record set by Whirlaway in the Massachusetts Handicap 30 years ago. Albritton gave up only five-hits (both runs were unearned). He walked three and struck out eight. Righthander Doug Grantham, former Delta State hurler, limited the Bakers to only two hits--by Inmon and McKissick.

Grantham fanned 14 and walked seven. Two walks, a single and an error by Smith at short enabled the Independents to score the markers. "We played good ball Sunday," said Bernard Smyly, Baker business manager, "but we just couldn't hit Saturday. You can't win a ball game with only two hits. Sunday was one of the first times we put everything together." The Bakers' next action will be against the undefeated Jackson Macks.
