Arnold raises Hummer of a stir NEW YORK — An orange Hummer with two bicycles strapped to the roof roared down Broadway, hung a sharp left at 44th Street and motored its way into ABC's "Good Morning America" studios. Out stepped "Terminator" star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. It was enough to make even New Yorkers gawk. "Look at those deltoids. Look at those calves," quipped Schwarzenegger, referring to the H2 Hummer SUT, a "concept" design slated to become the second civilian version of the military's Humvee utility vehicle. Officials of AM General, the South Bend, Ind., company that makes the Hummer, and General Motors, which owns the name and markets it worldwide, staged the public relations stunt Tuesday to present the H2 Hummer, a slightly scaled-down but still macho machine, to be displayed at the New York International Auto Show this weekend. The auto executives also presented a $13 million check to Schwarzenegger to support the Inner City Games Foundation, a sports and educational program for urban youth that he co-founded and now operates in 14 major U.S. cities. Schwarzenegger originally persuaded AMG to produce a domesticated version of the Humvee, and he still drives the first one produced a decade ago. GM, which acquired the brand name in 1999, developed and engineered the H2 Hummer, which may reach dealers in 2002. Shields weds for second time LOS ANGELES — Brooke Shields is suddenly a married woman. The former "Suddenly Susan" star exchanged wedding vows with writer-producer Chris Henchy last Wednesday on Santa Catalina Island off the Southern California coast. No other details about the ceremony were available, a spokeswoman said Tuesday Shields, 35, and Henchy, 38, became engaged in July The marriage is Shields' second. She and tennis star Andre Agassi married in April 1997 and filed for divorce two years later Shields' NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan" ended in 2000 after four years. T ADVICE The world is a big enough place for transsexuals Dear Ann Landers: Thank you for printing that letter about the transsexual whose parents could not accept him as "Madeleine." That letter meant a lot to me because I am a transsexual woman, which means I once was considered a male. Many people assume it was my "choice" to be this way. They are mistaken. The only choice for me was to live or die. No one chooses to be transsexual. This is just the way we "turned out." I have lost jobs, friends and the respect of many people who ^ were unable to accept the truth about me. I did not make this decision for sexual reasons. It was an identity issue. I have always felt that my body was out of sync with my brain. I am not a freak. I do not ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. molest children or exhibit deviant behavior. I want nothing more than a loving family of my own and the ability to lead a quiet life, have a decent job and make friends. I am not "proud" of being a transsexual, but I am proud that I have been able fo come to terms with who I really am. People should not make our decision their problem. — A New Woman in Ohio Dear Ohio: The most important lines in your letter are ones I hope my readers will remember They are, "No one chooses to be transsexual. It is just the way we 'turned out.' " The same, of course, can be said of homosexuality We need a better understanding and more compassionate acceptance when there is deviation from the norm. This world is a big enough place for everybody Dear Ann Landers; A co-worker and I recently planned a ski trip. Unfortunately she became sick a few days before we were scheduled to leave and had to cancel. Here's the problem, Ann. Our hotel biU had to be paid ahead of time and was non refundable. Since I already had reservations, I asked my brother's fiancee if she would like to go with me. She agreed. I did not expect her to pay for these accommodations. Should my co-worker pay for half the hotel bill, since she canceled and I could not get the money back? She thinks my brother's fiancee should have picked up the other half of the biU. I believe my coworker should at least have offered to reimburse me. — Colorado Connie Dear Colorado Connie: Your co-worker who canceled has a moral obligation to pay for half of the bill. The fact that someone else stepped in at the last minute does not relieve her of that responsibility Your brother's fiancee, however, should have paid for any "extras" — meals and drinks and so on. I hope this settles it. Dear Ann Landers: My father-in-law was recently divorced after many years of marriage, and his newfound freedom has turned him into a kid again. He buys toys for himself, including wind-up cars, trucks, trains, gadgets that squeak, pop and light up, and other items that the average 5-year-old would enjoy The problem is, Dad has put together a little car made of spare parts and a snowmobile engine. It has no brakes, and the steering comes loose quite often. His car can go up to 35 mph, and he sometimes drives it over icy roads and frozen ponds. If Dad crashes, my wife and I are his only relatives and wiU be forced to take care of him. He is being irresponsible, and it's only a matter of time before he has an accident. Is there anything I can do? — Somewhere in Michigan Dear Michigan: You can do two things: pray a lot and make sure he has insurance. Write to Ann Landers at P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611.
