Californian and Soviet wife exult in reunion after three years apart By The New York Times LOS ANGELES — Tony Bartholomew and his Soviet-born wife, Tatyana, had little sleep or time alone in the first week since they were reunited Dec. 30, saying they felt as if they were on a honeymoon after three years of separation. "We feel fantastic," Bartholomew said after the new year was rung in. "This is the first night we've slept a little bit in three days, but this is our honeymoon — we have a wonderful romance." The Bartholomews met in 1981, when he hailed a taxi in a snowstorm in Moscow and she was a passenger. The Salina Journal Friday, January 10,1986 Page N3 1 'We fell in love during six of my business trips to Moscow," said Bartholomew, a 47-year-old engineer, "I stayed for several weeks at a time, just to be with her." After what he described as "months and months of trouble with the Russian government," Bartholomew married 27-year-old Tatyana Bondareva in March 1982 in a civil ceremony in Moscow. "It was what I would call a canned presentation," he said in an interview at the Holiday Inn in suburban Glendale, where he has been living since he began work here. Bartholomew, as a consulting engineer, spends more than half the year traveling. Mrs. Bartholomew petitioned five times to leave the Soviet Union and join her husband before her request was granted in November. Shortly after the couple were married, Bartholomew had to leave the Soviet Union. He had not seen his wife until she joined him. She is the second of 10 spouses of Americans to arrive here under an agreement made before the Geneva summit in November. "It is the triumph of my life just to have her with me," Bartholomew said. In the more than three years that they were separated, the couple wrote letters and talked frequently On the telephone, but it "was still a living nightmare," said Bartholomew. After a whirlwind tour of New York City and several television appearances, the Bartholomews are now planning the first steps of their life together. "We want to find an apartment right away," Bartholomew said. "She loves California. At first, she thought she loved New York, but now it's Los Angeles." Mrs. Bartholomew had never been outside the Soviet Union previously. Her husband said she was "watching lots of television to pick up the American slang expressions" and asking a lot of questions. Mrs. Bartholomew, who taught world history, speaks English fluently. She said she planned to work as a Russian interpreter for the Department of Immigration "after I learn how to operate here." Mrs. Bartholomew said she was surprised by the American people. "They are so warm and nice and natural," she said. "If they want to smile, they smile." "Life in Russia is very plain," Mrs. Bartholomew said. But she said that financially, life was easier there. "Here you have to deal with checks and credit cards, I must get used to that," she said.
