Fort Myers News-Press Fri. April 5. I9T4 13-B Missing Girl's Mom Still Waits, Hoping Amy's Alive Mrs. Billig believe they had Amy captive. Charles and Lawrence Glasser.

16. were charged with extortion. "Please no more crank calls like that one," Mrs. Billig said, weeping. "I would have done anything to get her back begged, borrowed or stolen." This week Amy was graduated in absentia frm Adelphi Academy of Coral Gables, the diploma being presented to her parents.

If 1 only knew she were alive or if she'd been killed. If she's dead at least I can mourn her' Mrs. Ned Billig A drop off was arranged and police staked out the Miami Beach hotel where Mrs. Billig was to hand over the money. She was greeted by a longhaired, teen-age boy but refused to give him the cash until he proved he knew where Amy was.

The boy was unaMe to provide any new information and police closed in. arresting the youth and his tw inbrother who was hovering nearby. Police said one of the boys imitated a girl's voice to make year-old son, said one of the most frustrating things was persuading police that Amy was not just one of thousands of runaways. "But now the police know." Mrs. Billig said.

"They've talked to all her friends and are convinced she wouldn't just leave home." Friends donated $2,000 in reward money and Amy's school staged a music festival to raise $1,500 for private detectives. In the family's hometown of Parkway. N.Y., Richard Rowson collected nearly $1,000 from former neighbors. The Billigs had flyers printed in English and Spanish to distribute throughout South Florida, placed ads in newspapers and stood on street corners, stopping passerby to ask if they have seen Amy. With the publicity came the phone calls from cranks, mystics, other mothers of runaways and collect calls from people who breath into the phone.

Then on March 21 came a call from a man demanding $30,000 for Amy's life. Mrs. Billig begged the money from friends and when the man called back to arrange a rendezvous the desperate mother said she heard a voice that sounded like Amy saying: "Mama, mama, please." MIAMI (AP) It is more than four weeks since Sue Billig first pasted a photograph of her daughter on a sign and toured city streets in search of clues to the teenager's disappearance. Since then Mrs. Billig's search has produced hundreds of phone calls, dozens of false hopes and a $30,000 extortion attempt by two boys.

"If I only knew she were alive or if she'd been killed. If she's dead at least I could mourn her," Mrs. Billig said Thursday. "It's the not knowing. We have hope she's alive, somewhere." Ann Billig, 17, was last heard from March 5 when she returned home from school about noon and called her father at his art gallery to ask MRS.

Briggs of Florida's Middle District. Gurney is a member of the Judiciary Committee and recommended Briggs' original appointment. He has been the -target of an investigation by Briggs' office into a housing kickback scandal. The continuing investigation has already produced several indictments, including a multi-count charge against a former Gurney aide. Earlier this week, Chiles requested formally that Briggs' reappointment to another four year term be the subject of a Judiciary Committee hearing an unusual request.

An aide to Chiles said then that the senator wanted to clear up some "unanswered questions in the public's mind" about Briggs performance, particularly in connection with the investigation of Nixon campaign dirty tricks artist Donald Segretti.
