Farmer Prizes Collection Of Bibles BIBLES IN ALL LANGUAGES — Henry and Lone Hatcher check part of collection of Bibles in many languages, sizes and ages. There are 108 books in collection which Hatcher values at more than $3,000. By BETH LILLEY The Garden City Telegram Written for The Associated Press SATANTA, Kan. (AP)-One of the finest collections of Bibles in Kansas is owned by Henry Hatcher, a farmer who lives 10 miles south of Satanta. The Bibles in the 108-book collection are in many sizes, ages and languages. Among 25 foreign language editions are those printed in Spanish, Chinese, Hebrew, Turkish, French, Latin, German, Austrian and Cherokee. Hatcher is unable to read any of the foreign language Bibles but prizes them highly. He'estimated the value of the collection at more than $3,000. Hatcher said he became interested in starting a collection when he purchased a Bible, printed in the 1700s, in a Denver, Colo., book store about 12 years ago. In US* Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher made a four-week tour of Europe and while overseas purchased several foreign Bibles. Among their purchases was a Latin Bible printed in 1690. Hatcher said the cover is made of wood from the Holy Land. They bought it in Rome. One of Hatcher's most valuable Bibles is a 1606 English edition- oldest in his collection. Estimated to be worth $200, Hatcher paid $27 for it in London. Another of his older Bibles was printed in 1629 in German and is a refugee from the Hitler regime. Hatcher explained that he has five or six Bibles printed in the German language but the 1629 edition is quite a prize since Hitler ordered all Bibles and reli- gious music destroyed. This Bible somehow got to America. In the collection is a Bible printed in Braille. The Hatchers have a special room in their farm home for the collection. Besides the foreign language editions, Hatcher has purchased many religious history books. He has a 12-volume set of The Interpreter's Bible, containing both the Old and New Testaments. Also displayed in the room are first place fair winner ribbons, ribbons, received from Bible displays at the Liberal Fair over the past few years. Besides fairs, Hatcher has shown part of his collection at the Satanta library, schools and churches. The Hatchers are members of the Satanta Methodist Church. Mrs. Hatcher is the fourth grade Sunday School instructor. Hatcher teaches the older men's class. They presented the fourth grade class with a Bible dictionary last Easter and hope to make it a regular custom. Hatcher said he has purchased the largest share of his religious books, but that several of the Bibles, including the Cherokee Bible, have been gifts. The Cherokee-printed Bible is a duplicate of the Bible carried by the Cherokee Indians during World War II. "The Bible was used as a code during the war because of the difficulty in mastering the language," Hatcher explained. American missionares in foreign lands have sent Hatcher several Bibles and religious history books. All books in the collection are well preserved. Some of the older ones have pages yellowed from age but all are readable. Hatcher also has many modern version Bibles. "I don't thin!- my collection is one of those rare things," he said, "but to me it's invaluable."
