John, David, Patty, Shayla Sometimes flowers can say what words Inglis Florists 622-4641 Top 100 MemberSatisfaction Guaranteed Transplant patients get a bit of good news By Jane Erikson ARIZONA DAILY STAR For transplant patients, there was good news from the Governor's Office Friday.

Last year, a tobacco-tax fund set up four years ago to help the patients purchase expensive prescription drugs was cut by more than half in the Legislature. Lawmakers were advised in April 2001 that the fund was underutilized and cut its annual appropriation from $145,000 to $70,000. The fund ran dry at the end of last month. Top officials at University Medical Center, which operates the fund on behalf of its transplant patients, learned of the problem shortly before Christmas from an irate patient, who had been notified by hospital staff that the fund had been used up. The officials sent a Christmas Eve appeal to Gov.

Jane Hull for $80,000 to carry the fund through the end of the fiscal year, on June 30. On Friday, Hull signed an executive order appropriating the $80,000 from her health crisis fund, which comes from tobacco-tax revenues. Marcy Nicrosini, the Phoenix heart transplant patient who complained to UMC officials, said she is still worried what will happen after June 30. "It's great. It means that people get their medications for six months.

But then what?" Nicrosini said. With legislators looking at cutting another $200 million from this year's budget, and up to $1 billion from the 2002-2003 budget, that's anyone's guess.
