10:00 a.m. NE Side water line breaks; homes dry ARIZONA DAILY STAR A water line break on the Northeast Side on Thursday afternoon left much of the FortyNiner Golf and Country Club area without water for several hours, officials said. A contractor's crew was excavating the 30-inch main line when the side of the hole collapsed, said Mitch Basefsky, spokesman for Tucson Water. Repair crews were able to isolate the main and turn off the water, which affected many homes in the area, although officials couldn't determine precisely how many. Crews were working late Thursday to remove all the water from the hole so they could determine if the break was in the 30-inch main or an 8-inch secondary pipe that was right at the place of the collapse, Basefsky said.

Basefsky said it is difficult to estimate how much water was lost, but the amount is "many thousands of gallons." The repairs were expected to take until early this morning and Tucson Water's goal was to return service by this morning. Bottled water was available for area residents at East Tanque Verde Road and North Soldier Trail. Edward F. (Ike) Killmeier Ill passed away on May 24, 2004, after a second battle with cancer.
