Flu, pneumonia clinics planned in county 2 Wednesday screenings Health department recommends shots for 'at-risk' individuals By GORDON D. FIEDLER JR. Tlie Salinn Journal The start of flu season is several months away, which means flu shot season is already here. On Thursday, the Salina-Saline County Health Department begins its annual series of special flu vaccination clinics. At two of the clinics, Salina Regional Health Center will offer pneumonia vaccinations for eligible recipients. Flu vaccine is available to people older than 18 who are Saline County residents or who work in the county. Persons under age 18 TDUMP need a signed doctor's order to receive the shot, and must be accompanied by a parent. Those receiving the pneumonia shot must be at least 65 years old or have a signed doctor's order. Influenza is a virus passed from an infected person to the nose or throat of others. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, cough, sore throat and muscle aches. The illness can lead to pneumonia and death. The health department recommends the shots for "at-risk" individuals: the elderly, persons with chronic diseases, health care workers, or household members or caretakers in contact with at- risk individuals. The cost of each shot is $5. The pneumonia vaccinations are $17. The immunization schedule: • Thursday — Gypsum Health Clinic, 9 to 11 a.m. • Oct. 10 — 4-H Building, Kenwood Park, Salina, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (influenza and pneumonia) and at Assaria Lutheran Church, starting at 9 a.m. (flu only) • Oct. 16 — Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth, 1 to 3 p.m. • Oct. 17 — Brookville Community Center, 9 to 10 a.m. • Oct. 18 — 4-H Building, Kenwood Park, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (influenza and pneumonia). Throughout the month, the flu vaccine also will be available to elderly residents of 12 apartment complexes and churches around the county. Notices at each site will be posted. For $8, persons can receive the shots at the health department, 125 W. Elm, during regular busi- ness hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays. For more information, call the health department at 826-6602 or the hospital at 452-7600. By The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. — A five-state compact ignored the protests of a lawyer and voted 4-1 Monday to force a Nebraska environmental director to speed up the license review process for a proposed low- level radioactive waste dump. The Central Interstate Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission wants to build a concrete reinforced warehouse in Boyd County to hold waste from Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The Nebraska Departments of Health and Environmental Quali- ty have been reviewing the license application from developer US Ecology and had expected to release its results in about a year. But on a motion from Arkansas Commissioner Laura Gilson, the compact voted to give DHEQ Director Randy Wood until Jan. 14 to release the documents. Nebraska Commissioner Greg Hayden cast the lone dissent. Attorney William Lamson Jr. of Omaha, special counsel to the state, had written to Commission Chairman James O'Connell of Kansas last week to complain about the Aug. 27 meeting of the compact.
