Prof. Love resides at Liberty, Clay county, where he has been engaged in teaching school for many years. In appearance, he resembles Jas.

G. Blaine to some extent, but as an orator, he appears to possess but little personal magnetism. In his speech Tuesday evening, he adopted tho course marked out by the camnaisrn speakers of the Repub lican partv and discussed the tariu question according: to the Chicago platform. For a man who has devot ed his life to the moral education of the youth, it appeared a little strange that he would agree with the Repub lican platform, and repeat Blaine demand that the government shall encourage tho useless and filthy habit of tobacco chewing by reducing the tax on the "filthy weed" in order to relieve the people of needless oppression. Oa the liquor question, however, Prof.

Love made a graceful summersault, and did not say whether he agreed fully with his party's platform. His picture of the dessolation that would follow tho adoption of the Mill's bill, and the consequent poverty of the people of this government, was adroitly drawn, and to those who have not read for themselves, almost convincing. The professor failed to tell his audience that his own party four years ago incorported in their party platform a resolution demanding "a revision of tho tariff," and also failed to state that the Democrats, instead of attempting to introduce free trade, are simply demanding a reduction of 7 per cent of the present, ex-exorbitant rates on tho necessaries of life and the retention, or increase, if necessary, of the duties on luxuries, such as Filks, chanipajrne, etc. His claims that all the. loading thinkers of the country coincide with his views is rntof seventh annual nWsage.

But Prof. Love finds himself upon a platform his part' has made for him, and he must accept it. Though not an orator, ho is rather a pleasant speaker, and we believe a gentleman whom his high-tariff Republican friends can conscientiously support. Death of Vincent Carter. Died, at the home of J.

W. Swank, Albany, Aug. 19, 188S, Vincent Carter, in his seventy-fifth year. Mr. Carter was born in Tennessee, Jauurary 4, 1814.

Elijah and Susannah Carter, his parents, moved to Indiana where Vincent was married to Patience Glendeuning, Feb. 2, 1839. The Carter families moved to Missouri in 1841, Vincent settling on the farm he owned at the time of his death. He was tho father of ten children, eight of whom mourn his death. Mr.

Carter was a member of the M. E. church from his youth, alway, by a consistent life adorning the doctrines of God his Savior. Ho took sick at the reunion at Albany, and was removed to his sister's, Mrs. Martha Swank, where he died after ten day's illness.

His wife proceeded him in death one year and a half. He was buried in the old family graveyard on the 20th. Thus the pioneers aro passing across AYho will fill his place Casobolt Still at Large. Charles Casebolt, who murdered Jasper Robinson, is still at large, although the officers have been constantly on the alert for his arrest. The standing reward for his capture is $35Q, the state, through the governor, offering if200, Gentry county 100, and tho citizens of Denver Case-bolt is described as being 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, 24 years old, short light mustache, hazel eyes, rather large nose-, jljjhtly stooped-shouldered.

Whether he has left the vicinity of his home at Pattonsburg and lied to some other place of refuge, is not known, lr.it it is asserted that he was without means and must have had the aid of friends to assist him with funds if he did skip out. B. VanDerveer, Sec. Labor Convention. Pursuant to a call for a mass convention of the Labor party to nominate a county ticket, the convention met last Monday afternoon. The total number present and participating was from fifteen to twenty-five.

Saint Manring, of McFall, was elected chairman, and John Spessard secretary. A committee on resolutions reaffirmed the national and btate platform, and declared emphatically against any fusion with the "Rons" or "Demos." It was decided to nominate candidates by acclamation. The ticket nominated was as follows: For Representative, R.M. Reeco. For Collector, J.

F. Fry. For Treasurer, no. IL Sampson. For Assessor, Peter Culp.

Brace secretary. They meet every two weeks on Saturday afternoon. Jarups Newman, our ever watchful and faithful night watchman, has been granted an on'rioa! pension by the government. Jim deserve recognition by Uncle Sam, and his many friends will be glad to learn of his luck. Some one from Grant City who attended the reunion and was not provided with pie to eat and a feather bed to sleep on, went home with a determination to grumble, and very naturally he found the "Times" ready to publish his grievances.

The word "to-morrow" was made to read "to-day" by a crazy freak of the types in speaking of the Evona Eicnic last Friday. But everybody ad been previously informed of the date of the picnic, and as the result, a large crowd, estimated at 2,000 persons, attended and enjoyed one of the most pleasant picnics of the season. The prize offered for the best singing class was won by the Methodist Juvenile singing class, of Evona. With two to four thousand dollars annually being sent out of the county for printing, it is no wonder the newspapers are struggling for existence. For one, the Ledger, will never support man for office who sends away from homo for printing that can be done in the county, and these remarks are not directed wholly to the Republican county court.

It is probable that the will of Jacob Kessler, of Jackson township, who died a month or two ago, will be contested by a daughter by his first wife who resides in Kansas. A lawyer from Atchison, Kansas, was here last week in her interests. What chance the daughter has for breaking the will is hard to say, as she was pro vided for bv beinc willed 80 acres of laud. The announcement last Monday afternoon of the death of Ju-0. A. Hundley, was as sad as it was startling, bhe was taken sick during Sunday night with cholera morbus, and at half past four Monday afternoon, sho was a corpse.

Few knew of her illness previous to the announcement of her death. On Wednesday afternoon Rev. Hurley conducted the funeral at the family residence, and the procession to the grave almost reached from the residence to the city cemetery, showing the high esteem in which tho deceased was held by her acquaintances. Three children, the youngest being eighteen months old, are left motherless. The whole community sympathizes with Mr.

Hundley in his sad bereavement. A contributed obituary notice will appear next week. Windy Jim. whose sir name is Hil-lis, nominee of the Labor party for congressman, made a lengthy speech at the Labor convention Monday, in which he threw "red hot shot" (in his mind) against Dockery. whom he denounced as a banker.

The fun of the thin; is that Windy Hillis is a stock holder in the McFall bank, a fact he did not mention. He almost succeeded in bringing his audience to tears( by stating that Dockery skipped out from congress when Jay Gould was there to buy up the whole outfit on the land graiit business. Robertson, Fielding Stapleton, G. W. Hunter and the Ledger scribe as pilots, drove to Siloam, Sunday, on a pleasure trip, and were caught in the severe rain storm that flooded that section of country Sunday evening. It was impossible to return till next morning, but we believe no one regrets the pleasant time spent with the clever and accommodating host. Mr.

F. C. Lee and his estimable wife who have recently taken charge of the Siloam Springs hotel. Few of our citizens realize that here is located one of the largest and best kept hotels in north west Missouri. The building, which was but recentlv completed, contains 60 rooms, elegantly furnished and provided with every convenience for the comfort and pleasure of those who desire to test the merits of the mineral waters, or to spend a vacation with luxuries and comfort at your command.

There are quite a number of patients present at this time, some of whom have tried the other famous waters, and pronounce the Siloam waters the best of all. The way the torrents of rain poured down during the evening was awful." but with tho parlor ringing with piano strains, vocal music and some choice recitations by a sweet little daughter of Mr. Lee, the storm on the outside had no terrors for the refugees.
