It's supposed to be part of the amusement during a country fair at the estate. The clues planted by Stapleton led to the first "victim" in the boathouse, but somebody has done the victim in for sure. However, Stapleton, as writer Ariadne Oliver, does not solve the crime in the manner of Jessica Fletcher in "Murder She Wrote." Leave that to detective Hercule Poirot in this delicious romp by Agatha Christie. Peter Ustinov stars as Poirot and milks the Belgian detective for every eccentricity. "Dead Man's Folly," which CBS will telecast tonight, also stars Tim Pigott-Smith and Susan Wooldrige (from "Jewel in the Crown") and Constance Cummings. It was filmed entirely in England, particularly at West Wickham Estate. The mystery writer she portrays is actually an Americanized version of Agatha Christie. Christie occasionally put herself in (by another name) in the Poirot books. "Ariadne is a great admirer of Poirot and when she runs into him at Harrod's she invites him to the Murder Hunt," said Stapleton. "She has a hunch there's going to be a real murder. He is disdainful of hunches because he works with reason and logic. "Of course, there is a real murder. Two of them. He solves them, but by the end of the picture he gives her credit for her intuition." Stapleton, best known as Edith from "All in the Family," is no stranger to Agatha Christie. She twice played her detective Miss Marquee Live in Salina The Great Great Lakes film, Sunflower Lions Travel and Adventure Series, Central High School auditorium, 7:30 p.m. Salina movies Jewel of the Nile — Mid-State Cinema, Rated PG 101 Dalmatians — Sunset Plaza Cinema, Rated G Out of Africa — Sunset Plaza Cinema, Rated PG Rocky IV — Mid-State Cinema, Rated PG Spies Like Us — Fox Theater, Rated PG Young Sherlock Holmes — Vogue Theater, Rated PG TV movies, specials 7 p.m. — The McMasters, WGN, Salina Cable Channel 11 Burl Ives, Brock Peters (1970). Marple on the stage in "A Murder Is Announced" and "Murder at the Vicarage." She also played her in "Something's Afoot," a musical spoof for the Showtime pay television network. "In my opinion," she said, "the enduring quality of the mystery is in the characters. And Agatha Christie wrote wonderful characters that can be played. Poirot is such a wonderful character, as is his sidekick, Capt. Hastings. He's delightful. Agatha was having fun. She made her two detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson." Stapleton appeared last month in Jules Feiffer's "Grownups" for Showtime. The play, which also stars Charles Grodin, Marilu Henner and Martin Balsam, will be seen later this year as part of the "Great Performances" series on PBS. She will also be seen on a two-hour "The Love Boat" filmed in Egypt. The special episode was delayed because of the Achilla Lauro high- jacking, which took place off Egypt.
