It attracted the curiosity of several persons, and so nluch so, that they were bent on finding out what the thintg really was It was a very small affair, about a foot long with two steel rod-, each about ten inches long, which was in a glass bottle, atid upon tiquiry the fellow said that it was a "divining that he had paid $65 for it. le said that it was heavily niagnatized alld that it would easily locate the whereabouts of gold. silver, led, irot, coal in the bowels of the earth, alnd that he expected for this instrument to make himn rich. The way it is used, is to hold it very near the earth and when it conme-s across a prescious thing it will be drawn to the earth and stay right there, anid all a tellow has todo is start digging for it. It is an old and trite saying that a fool is born every mninute in the day.

Suckers are plentiful and they are biting all the time. One price-how nice. Buyingis a pleasure. No hait-uo wait. Always honest measure.

-At Hamley's. Mrs. J. E. Martin, mother of Mr.

G. C. Martin. who has been visiting hint and his wife for the past three months, returned to her bomne in Fiiiley, Ohio on Sunday last, accounpatied by Mr. Martin.

Mrs. Martin passed her 84th birth-day last Friday, and bale and hearty, having made the trip alone from Ohio to spend a few months with her son in the South. She has been bowed down in grief in the past few weeks, haying lost two of hebr soi-in-laws in Ohio and a grandeonl in Colorado, who was caught in the terrible snow slide that occurred in that State. Yesterday morning the river gauge read 32.15, a rise of in twenty-four hours. Sante date last year, the gauge read 24:35 feet.

The highest stage the river ever reached was on March 30, 1897. when the gauge a read 44.40. The levees began to break i. then, or there is no telling how high the river would have went. We are glad to say that the Ohio is falling at all points, and a fall has now set in at Cairo, and unless there is more rains above, it will only be a few days when the fall should reach here.

We received a short letter from our friend Oliver J. Hurley of Globe, Arizona, on Monday. He said he did not want to miss an issue of the that he is anxious to know the doings in his old home. We would like to see him and his big bud back among us, and we don't believe they can stay away when Providence is on the line of a big railroad system, which will soon be the case. By January let, and perhaps before that date, we will be going and coming by "the all rail route." A Pleasant Drive.

Mr. Yaucey Bell, reiprenting the Lake Providence Oil Co, wenit to Atlanta last last Monday, satid it is said that he will close the contract for the erection of the oil mill Tlhis looks like businesp on the, part of some of the progressive citizens of Providence. SMr. Hugh McGutire, ote of our ole est and best who went to the dlHotel I)ieu in New Orleans for tresatnmet a few weeks ago, is improving in health we are glad to say. We hope Mr.

McGuire returns fuly re. Sstored to bealth. 8. W. Green, one of the beet inI formed colored men of the State, who resided here for sometltpe and moved ir to New Orleants a few years ago, was a visitor to town this week.

He is organiling K. of P. lodges anud lecturing SOn Pythianism. Mr. D.

F'. Peck, our popular and hustling city marshal, who has beet I laid up with a case of grippA for the past bthree weeks, is now imllprovitig and will be able to be out us a few dtas THE ROAD 18 A CERTAINTY. We accepted an invitation from Mr. W. K.

Spurlock last Friday, and in company with Mr. Robt. Nicholson went up to Cannrmel, to look at the work, if any was really being done on the construction of the railcoad the for the Memphis, Helena and Louisiana railroad. We had beard so many rumors about the back line and the front line that we thought we would go and take a look so as to report the facts to our readers. We left Providence last Friday eveuing about half past 2, behind two of Mr.

Spurlock's fine mules, and at 7 o'clock we were at Cariola, a distance of 35 miles. We remained there Friday night in the care of Mr. Peter Ford, who runs a dry goods store, drug store, undertaking establi.bmeut, hotel and livery stable, besides being a justice of the peace, and a few more enterprises that we forgot to put down. We got an early start from Cariola atnd was at Carmel, a distance of about 6 miles by 7 o'clock. It was the most horrible road we ever saw.

Carmel has three stores, but the owner of the large plantation, is Dr. A. Scott, who we found to be a high-toued gentileman, full of push and energy, and who informed us that he had already sold twent) lots, and fine stores wouli be erected on them at an early date. It is a beautiful location for a town, right on the brink of the hills, and there is nothing to keep it fromt being a hlotling place. We met Mr.

McCarthy and soti, the contractors, who we found to be affrble and hospitable gentlemen, who had breakfast prepared for us and talked railroad all the titne. The distance from the Louisiana'line to T'rippe Junction, is 42 1-2 miles, and from Carmel to Trippe 35 miles. The entire ling is covered by contractors with the exception of 3 1-2 miles, which was thought would be taken this week. Fromn the Louisiana line to Carmel it is 7 1-2 miles, and Kilbourn Wetherby have taken a contract for 1. 1-2 miles of this from the line north; then Mr.

Nicholson joins them with 3 miles through old fields. Ibis leaves about 3 miles on the south side of Bayou Macon to be let, whichl is very bad work. Front the bayou to Cl'armtel the distance is about a mile, anto the embankment for this distance was to have been completed to-daypart of it being a 16 foot till. and the heaviest work on the line. Work was started Monday north from Carmuel and these contractors have four miles of work.

The right of way, one huun. dred feet from Carmel, both north and south, is cut out as far as the eye can see. Mr. McCarthy informed us that with good weather the 42 1-2 miles will be ready for the cross ties and rails within three months. Tintber, ties and other material is being brought to both Lake Village and 't'rippe Junction in large quantities.

We hardly think that work will be started south of the Louisiana line within three months. We were given to understand that the Arkansas works would have to be completed first, and then large forces would be started all along the line in this Mtate. The road is a certainty, and all the work we saw is several miles south of where they would have taken the back line, if they intended to do this. So there is nothing to do but wait, and only a short time at that, when wo will have a railroad at last. Then we will have a boomuing parish, and a booming and real live town.

Easter hats at The Famous. She said, --I'm very angry;" He said, "What matters that? I'll take you to The Famous, And buy an Easter Hat." She dressed up in a hurry. To they went; And for an Easter bonnet His cash he freely spent. And as they homeward wended, She smiled at him and said, "0O Georgie! wont this bonnet Look nice upon mty And now there are no fusses Withlin that household small, And Georgie's wife obeys him, At every beck and call. MORAL.
