Thursday, June 18, 1998 Lansing State Journal Databank Obituary Polly Gibson, active resident of Lansing area By Christine McDonald Lansing State Journal Near Polly Gibson's home stands a lasting reminder of her life. Gibson, who died Tuesday from complications of diabetes, once spent a entire summer carving her life's story in a totem pole, which now stands near her Okemos home. "It tells the whole family story," said Bill Gibson, Polly's son. "It shows her mother as a schoolteacher with a book and it shows her move to Michigan. At the top is an owl, which was her favorite bird." Gibson, 81, moved to Michigan from Tennessee in 1935 to teach math at what now is Pattengill Middle School.

"She did I more in her lifetime than normal people do," said Carl Haussman of Lansing, family friend. "She was just a class act all She served on the Lansing Board of Education, was a board member of the Michigan National Bank and a president of the Lansing Women's Club. She was also on the board of Plymouth Congregational Church, president of the Junior League of Lanmember of the Metropolitan Fine Arts Council and president of the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital Guild. She ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for the state Senate in 1970.

"She was Bill Gibson said. the ability to problem bring people together." Her hobbies included golfing, walking and painting. She painted mostly nature scenes, such as birds and flowers. She also loved going to high school football games to sit in the press box, especially at Sexton High School, said Gibson, who went to school there. Funeral services are 4 p.m.

A long and courageous battle against diabetes ended today for one of Lansing's most popular civic leaders-- Polly Dougherty Gibson. Born in Athens, TN, Polly attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and was graduated cum laude with a B.S.

Degree. In 1939, Polly came to Lansing to teach mathematics at Pattengill Junior High School. During the ensuing years, Polly touched so very many Lansing lives, challenging young minds at Pattengill; inspiring leadership and volunteerism as President of the Junior League; initiating progress and change as a member of the Lansing School Board; contributing wisdom and wit as President of the Lansing Sparrow Hospital Guild. Polly's services to the community were myriad; she was past President of Kingswood Mothers' Committee, Chairman of the Lansing Project on Aging, a board member of Metropolitan Fine Arts Council, the Lansing Community Services Council, Woldumar, the Michigan Association of School Boards, the Michigan Medical Malpractice Board, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the Michigan Consumers Council, and the Michigan National Bank. In her work for the Church, Plymouth Congregational Church, for seven Polly School years, served on the Board of Trustees, represented the Church as a delegate to numerous national and state conventions, and worked on the State Christian Education Committee.

As a candidate for the Michigan State Senate in 1970, Polly lost by a handful of votes but enthusiastically continued her efforts to make Michigan's, the government Polly served outstand- as years, Assistant Metropolitan Chairman, Precinct and Ward Chairman, and as a delegate to county and state conventions. Polly was passionately devoted to her family, the education of young and old, and the betterment the City of Lansing and the State of Michigan. is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert Gibson, a daughter, Becky, and her husband, Eric Cederquist of Phoenix, AZ; and a son, Bill, his wife, Judy, and their children, Robyn and Katie of Tulsa, OK. HITCHCOCK, ELMER "CLAYTON" Lakeland, FL Formerly of Lansing Age 72, died June 17, 1998 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was born November 2, 1925 in Lansing, MI and worked for General Motors, moving to Lakeland in 1986.

He was of the Lutheran faith, and was a Navy Veteran serving during World War II. He is survived VOEGELI, WINNIFRED I B. Dimondale Age 91, went home to be with the Lord on June 17, 1998. Born December 4, 1906, in Kalamo, MI, Mrs. Voegeli was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was active with many of the Church's ladies groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Mathias 1993; son, Marvin in 1986; 3 sisters; and 4 brothers. Nancy was the daughter of William and Susan (Wargo) Aubrey. She was formerly a Teacher in the Rural School System and involved in local bowling leagues for many years. She enjoyed her grandchildren, garden and camping. was preceded in death by her husband, Francis. She is survived by 2 daughters, Pat (Glenn) Briggs of Charlotte and Anita (Rodney) Rodgers Gwinn; 2 sons, Steve of Springport and Michael Hyde Tulsa, OK; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 greatgreat (Sheba) children; Haight of sister, Higgins Mary Lake; Orville Hyde of Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 20, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment will be in West Carmel Cemetery. Visitation Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Mildred was born March 15, 1909 in Webberville, the daughter of Henry D. and Arline G. (Fear) Matthiesen. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids and the Mariam Circle.

Mildred was a member of the Eaton Rapids Garden Club, the I Club and volunteered with the American Red Cross at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. She was preceded in death husband, Russell and sister, Christine Crandall. Surviving are her 3 sons, Richard A. (Marilyn) McCormick of Florida, James R. (Betty) McCormick of Lansing and William D.

(Wendy) McCormick of Oregon; 5 grandchildren, Denise Daiss and James (Cindy) McCormick II, both all of Eaton Rapids, Jill (Robert) Simon of DeWitt, Christopher and Cara McCormick of Oregon; 7 grandchildren Stephanie, Christie Daiss, James III and Megin McCormick, Katelyn and Kortney Simon; sister, Cleo Damell of Dimondale; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery.

Johns for 43 years. Surviving are his wife, Joan; 4 children, Valerie (Arthur Sr.) Ordiway of Lansing, Greg Rueckert (friend, Danette), Eric (Regean) Rueckert and Carlotta (Ken) Kiffer, all of Laingsburg; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
