Spartan women shut down Baker BALDWIN CITY - Marymount's pressure defense limited Baker to only 25 percent shooting from the field Tuesday night as the Spartan women posted a 76-44 victory. "We were a little sloppy, but we played good defense," said Marymount coach Daryl Hoelting, whose team improved to 13-3 on the season. "We went man-to-man most of the game and pressed a little. The shot clock also ran out on them a couple of times." Baker made only 17 of 67 shots from the field, while Marymount continued to show improvement with its shooting touch, knocking down 35 of 76 of its shots for 45 percent. Junior post Andre Schmidt led the way for the Spartans with 17 points, hitting 7 of 10 shots, while Angela Hyde added 14 points, on 7- of-11 shooting. "We shot well, but we didn't execute our offense as well as I'd like," Hoelting said. "Baker was a scrappy team. They seemed to be all over the floor. "We just played a little Hat. It was a good game for us in the fact that we got to play a lot of people and work on a lot of things. And we won, which is what we came up here to do." The Spartans return to action Friday at 5 p.m. against Northeastern Oklahoma in the first round of the Coal Miner's Classic atPittsburg.
