Times News Service NEW YORK - The Wienerwald Restaurant chain, the Howard Johnson of Europe, is planning to become one of the largest restaurant operators in this country. In a recent interview, Frcid- rich Jahn, founder and sole owner of Wienerwald — which means Vieniia woods — said that he expected to open between 400 and 500 of his restaurants here in the next three years. He now has nine- locations in New York City, the first of which was opened in 1964. The affabJc, 47-year-old Austrian, a native of Linz, said he planned to start his expansion program here l)y opening from three to five rcs- taaranfs monlh.'.y early next year in the suburbs of New York and then to expand at a much faster rate throughout the United States by .mid- 1972. "By the end of 1974 there should be more than 400 Wicner- walds in this country," he added. Jahn, who started his first restaurant with one gas burner in Munich in 1955 and now has 356 units in his chain as well as 33 hotels, said he was convinced thait his development plans here would be successful. "The nine Wienerwalds in New York City were a pilot oi> eration and haVe been profitable almost from the start. Despite the recession and at a time when many of this city's famous eating spots are shutting their doors wo are still making money although our profit margin is down slightly from 1970," he said. The Wienerwald ovvner noted that if one can run a successful restaurant in New York despite the intense competition that prevails here "the rest of the country should be even more fertile ground." Jahn said that his chain's food and liquor costs are lower here than in Europe although labor costs are higher here. He has 296 Wienerwalds in West Germany, llie remainder are in Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland and Yugoslavia.
