10 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1996 THE.SALINA JOURNAL Accessorizing jeans to suits? DO IT WITH PEARLS! CULTURED PEARLS GO GREAT WITH THE STYLES OF THE SEASON VERSATILITY One of the most versatile pieces of jewelry a woman will ever own is certainly a beautiful strand of cultured pearls, and as the fashions of the season are a bit more elegant than in years past, cultured pearls are coming back in a big way. Why? Because pearls can be worn with anything and never look out of place. Their understated beauty and luminous charm embellish a woman and her variety of clothing options. From casual occasions to fancy evening events and everything in between, a simple, yet beautiful, pearl necklace can take a woman through every moment of her life - and every outfit in her wardrobe. CASUAL WEAR „ • For casual days,*a strand of pearls adds just the right amount of style to a crisp blouse-and-jeans or toasty turtieneck-and-pants ensemble. As man-tailored suits will be the rage for fall, the same strand of pearls lends a feminine accent to the male-inspired fashions. EVENING WEAR y, for those evening jfes, a single strand of lumi- ,.. ^- jwhite pearls will radiate a warm glow over even the coolest cocktail dresses. FINDING THE RIGHT PEARLS Natural pearls, found in the wild, are very rare and expensive. Cultured pearls, unlike imitation or faux pearls, also are grown by oysters, but with help from man. The luster of a good-quality pearl should be bright, not full. You should be able to see your own reflection clearly on the surface of a pearl. • Cleanliness . Cleanliness refers to the absence of disfiguring spots, bumps or cracks on the surface of a pearl. The cleaner the surface of the pearl, the more valuable it is. • Color-Cultured pearls come in a variety of colors, from black to pink. The color of a pearl should be matched to the owner's skin tone. The color of a pearl should be even, not spotty or blotchy. • Shape-Since cultured pearls are grown by oysters in nature, it is very rare to find a perfectly round pearl. However, the more symmetrical a pearl is, the greater its value. Baroque pearls, which are asymmetrical in shape, are uniquely interesting in their own right, but often cost far less than round pearls. • Size - Cultured pearls are measured by their diameter in millimeters. They can run smaller than 1 millimeter for tiny seed pearls or as large as 20 millimeters for a big South Sea pearl. The average size of most cultured pearls sold today is 7 to 7 1/2 millimeters.
