< B 'SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29;. 1996 i- I ! THB S/CLINA JOURNAL HATS & MORE Make A Statement With Accessories! What's timeless, can cost up to $650, and gets you noticed? The answer to this questions isn't as simple as it seems, because lots of things can be timeless and the price range can cover just about anything. The catch is to notice what this item brings. According to Suzanne Ohm of D Dawley Hat Shoppes in the Mall of America, the obvious answer to the question is: hats. "Hats can do a lot for people," Ohm said. "If you wear a hat, people will notice you across the room, you'll be waited on fast and treated better. You will stand out. I don't know what it is, it just happens. "When you wear a hat, people notice and assume that here is someone who really cares about themselves and what they look like." Shoes won't do it, belts won't do it, and a purse won't do it, but hats really raise the eyebrows, she says. There are hats for every occasion. From weddings and special occasions to hats that just feel good to wear. "The hats people wear tend to vary according to the season," Ohm said. "In the fall, the fashions turn to felt hats." Coordinate the headwear with belts, socks, purses and shoes of all sizes and colors. This year brown is big and animal prints are even bigger, according to Dillard's fashion merchandisers. The animal print fashion can be displayed with belts, shoes, socks, clothing and hats. Once you buy a hat, you really don't have to worry about it going out of style, according to Ohm. "Hats are timeless. That's one of the nice things about hats. They never really go out of style. You can enjoy them for years and years." Hat stores across America have been discovered by a new generation of hat lovers and for the past four to five years it's been more and more trendy to wear hats. "There is a whole generation that never knew anything about hats," Ohm said. "Now they're learning and finding them fun to wear. No matter what the age or generation, I urge people to try hats, they may find they like them." Shoes, hats, and accessories are provided by Dillard's. PHOTO: VINO WONG.
