spirit back of the day, the ideaf that created it, should be above and before everything else on that day. Of all American natal days, Armistice Day perhaps, stands for the greatest ideal, the ideal of universal world peace. Four million oi the cream of American manhood went "over there" and fought for it. Thousands of them gave their lives for it while other thousands came back so maimed in body or mind that the actual loss of life could scarce have been greater sacrifice. And all for what? For Peace! by 99 percent or more, the swarm now approaching would probably kill half the people on earth.

And as one continued to stroll, finding the same legend at every turn, and as from time to time a large truck, covered with big cloth banners bearing the same legend, passed through the streets, one almost came to the conclusion that the football game was the niost important event of the day's program. And there's the rub.

The football game was the most important thing in the day's program, in the minds of a large part perhaps the greater part of us. And, allowing the thought to grope about a bit, one is led to wonder if the same thing has not happened to all, or at least most, of our celebration days that should be, and in former years were, sacred to the memory of a great purpose and a great accomplishment. The average American youth of today has scarce a thought of the depth of meaning l)elonging to Independence Day, to Memorial Day, to Thanksgiving Day, aye, or even to Christmas Day. All, or nearly all, has been burled beneath the turbulent activities with which we celebrate those days. Perhaps "celebrate" is not the word perhaps we should have said, the "activities of the things that we dc on those days." The thought is this: We have no thought to detract one whit from the enthusiasm of the high school boys and gills God lbles3 them with reference to the foot-tall game.

While we encourage our youth in the things that they are directly interested in, and help them to win their games and to have a good time in the various legitimate v.ays, let us teach them, what we should never lose sight of ourselves, that the ideals of our tethers, embodied in these various mtal days, should mean as much to them now as they meant when tl ey were created. WHAT TIIE REAL NEWS IS. The really important news of the day is not always the news that gets the biggest headlines. Fifty years from now, incidents that got only a few lines of type at the time they happened will stand out as the noteworthy events of the time. A case in point is the recent achievement of Dr. Felix d'Herelle, professor of bacteriology at Yale University.

The chances are that you don't recall reading of this feat at all; yet there is just the possibility that it may prove one of the most important things of the whole decade. Briefly, what Dr. d'Herelle has accomplished is this; he has discovered the existence of a sub-microscopic organism which feeds on disease germs. This organism, he says, can be introduced in quantities into the human body. When it is introduced it settles down at once to the praiseworthy task of eating up germs that are infesting the human system.

As a result, the sufferer recovers from his ailment. It will not do, of course, to overestimate the immediate results of this discovery. It has taken Dr. d'Herelle nearly 20 years of research and experimentation to come this far, and many more. Prbably will be required before the magnificent possibilities of the discovery can be realized.

Yet what a glittering vista it opens! By feeding cultures of this new organism to 10,000 sufferers with dysentery, the doctors saved the lives of all but two. In India the treatment was used in combating Asiatic cholera, and the death rate fell from 63 per cent to 8 per cent. These samples show what may be done. Our grandchildren, very possibly, will rate Dr. d'Herelle's work as the most important of the current decade; perhaps the most important of the century.

There is strength in unity and Deterding has that strength. The average citizen probably has not even heard of it.

A generation As our airplane rises into the air to establish the desired altitude and course for our night flight ovet the Federal Airways, we are greeted in the distance by a flash of clear white light. To the pilot it is a flash from a Lept. of Commerce beacon light, and appears to be but a second's duration.
