It's fashion eyewear, and, according to Angle Williams, optical team leader in charge of selective purchasing for Dr. Lewis LaPierre's office, it's an invest• ment • "You can make your glasses look like a piece of jewelry," Williams says. "It's'be- coming so much more fun." With names like Nautica, Giorgio Armani, Martin Sitbon, Tura, Seiko, Christian Dior and Emporio Armani, shapes like ovals, "cat-eyes," vintage and geometric, styles like retro and zyl, and all the colors of the rainbow (or just tortoise, sand, crystal clear, or 60s shiny black), you're sure to fit eyewear to your face. "It doesn't matter what face shape you have," Williams says. "There's something for everyone." •. - i- The trend this year, according to Williams, appears to be thinner, lighter-weight eyewear with metals like titanium and stainless-steel. "With the titanium frames," Williams says, "you'll never have to buy another frame." Don Davis, manager of Atlas Optical, agrees that titanium is the durable frame of the 90s. "Customers will just not have a problem with the titanium," he says. "Especially in Kansas where it's so humid." Davis also says that big is out and small is in. "If you think small, think smaller yet," he says. "One thing for certain. Women's plastic frames are out We can't even buy them anymore." Ellen Denney, optometric assistant for Drs. Cole & Cooper, says the trend this year is small and oval-shaped. "It's the John Lennon style," she says. "That's how people can remember it" .Eyewear isn't just fashionable anymore, it's functional, too. The new metal frames are light and durable, and most can withstand wear and tear and bending in any direction. Sunglasses, in both prescription and regular lenses, are a popular buy in the 90s, too. According to Williams, the mirrored styles are It" in gold, blue, champagne, in just about any color and style. And with the wrap-around temples on the athletic-style eyewear, wearers don't feel a lot of wind or dust They're made for just about any sports enthusiast. According to Williams, the more expensive the sunglasses, the better optics they have. This means there's more clarity, with truer, sharper images. Eyewear, it seems, changes constantly. And there's eyewear to fit any budget and any face. "Everybody's style is different," Williams adds. "It can go with your lifestyle or your career. be dressy or casual. Or you can have two or more pair. Some styles even have diamonds and rubies." Whatever your style - round or square, red or black, vintage or "cat-eyed," it's eyewear, and it's fashion, and it can be a fun addition to your already-fun wardrobe.
