D2 THE NEWS-PRESS, LIFESTYLES, MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2005 CELEBRITY BUZZ CHRIS WADSW0RTH WBBH history becomes a little clearer if i milestone in the world of televi-sioa The ubiquitous weekly TV Guide underwent a transformation. Instead of the digest-sized tome of the last 50-plus years, readers found a full-blown, magazine-sized version in their mailboxes and on newsstands. The publication now has a heavier emphasis on celebrity news and offers more detailed "national" television listings. "National" is the key word there. Local listings such as WINK-TV, Fox4 and NBC2 no longer appear in TV Guide.

If part of an effort to cut costs and attract new subscribers after years of declining readership. Now for a shameless plug: Southwest Florida television fans looking for local listings can turn to the Teleview section Sundays in The News-Press. Chris worked in television news for 10 years before coming to The News-Press. If you have news tips or questions about local television and radio broadcasters, please contact Chris by e-mail or by phone at 344-4863. average household receives around 100 channels with poker and gardening shows and other niche programs giving people a greater chance of finding something they want to watch.

NEW TV GUIDE Last week marked a major A few weeks back, I wrote about the interesting histories behind the call letters of local television stations. At the time, we were able to identify Joe Buerry as one of the B's in WBBH (NBC2) and Howard Hoffman as the but no one knew who the other was. A copy of that article made its way to Buerry, who now sells advertising for KWNR-FM, a country music station in Las Vegas. Turns out the other was for Jackson Burgess, a wealthy area man who was the first investor to sign on to the startup station. Eventually, a total of eight men, including four local doctors, launched WBBH on Dec 18, 1968.

"It was an exciting period of my life," said Buerry, who chose the call letters himself and says the first stands for his last name. Tve got some ego being a salesperson." After leaving WBBH, Buerry went on to manage WEVU-TV (now WZVN-TV ABC7) for six years before heading west Over the years, he lost touch with Mary-Kate Olsen drops out of NYU NEW YORK What would Bob Saget say about this? Mary-Kate Olsen, who shared die role of Michelle with her twin sister, Ashley, on the 1980s comedy "Full House," has dropped out of college, early in her sophomore year, according to a published report "Mary-Kate Olsen has taken an approved leave of absence from New York University to focus on her increasing responsibilities as co-president of Duals tar Entertainment Group and to pursue personal interests," her publicist, Michael Fagnotta, was quoted on People magazine's Web site Friday. Olsen's twin sister, Ashley, also co-president of Dualstar, will remain at NYU. A message to Pagnotta from The Associated Press wasn't immediately returned Friday. Mary-Kate, 19, spent six weeks at a treatment center for an eating disorder in summer 2004.

Since starting out as babies on "Full House" Saget played their father the twins have created a multimedia empire with a clothing line, feature films, direct-to-video movies and other merchandise. Mary-Kate, a brunette, and Ashley, who is blond, became co-presidents of Dualstar when they turned 18. Each is estimated to be worth more than $150 million. Sen. Penn Teller appear in underwater TV show NEW YORK Penn Teller will go "Off the Deep End" in an NBC special to air Nov. 13. The two-hour show will be the first magic special ever performed entirely underwater, NBC said Wednesday. West, clearly a great believer in the right of free speech, then made a takeout double that did not fit the minimal requirements for that bid in any respect North, who didn't know what was going on but knew a good hand when he saw one, made the sensible bid of six clubs.

East looking at two aces, didn't care what was going on, and vociferously expressed his doubt that this contract could be made. West on lead, struggled a while and finally tried the king of spades as a desperate measure. Declarer gratefully won with the ace and led a club to the jack, losing to the ace. East returned a spade, and when South won with the queen, East almost fell off his chair. After declarer led a club to the queen, collecting West's ten, East also is featured.

He leaned forward, red-faced, and whispered to his partner so gently it could be heard at the far end of the room: "You idiot! You could have led a heart, a diamond or a club, and we would have beaten the hand. Instead, your nimble brain had to pick a spade." South, who was neither blind nor deaf, greeted this information with cocked ear. He knew East to be a good analyst and if East thought a diamond lead could beat the hand, it meant East was void.
