Pontiac - Tempest - Jeep Bill Sullivan, Sales Manager First Lutheran Church —Sixth and Walnut Steets— The first Lutheran service in Blytheville was held on July 7 1929, by Reg. R. G. Lange, who came to BlythevUle from Lafe, Ark., in search of fellow Lutherans. Twenty- four attended. That was the beginning of First Lutheran Church in Blythaville. It is still the only Lutheran Church in Mississippi County. The congregation was organized in 1930 with nine con- finned members, some 40 years after the founding of Bly- tfievUle. Lutheranism's late start in Blytheville is.prob- ably due to the fact that the original settlers of Blytheville were for the most part of English, Irish, and Scotch descent whereas most Lutherans of that time were of Scandinavian or German background. The congregation, though small, set itself to work The first resident pastor, Rev. H. J. Kleindienst, was installed in September of 1930. Already in 1929 a Sunday school had been organized by Mrs. F. G. Reichel. Soon a woman s organization, a young people's society, and a Christian Day School were organized. A building located on the corner of Sixth and Walnut Streets, present site of the church, was purchased in 1932 to house the Day School. This building was dismantled in 1948 to make room for the present structure, erected in 1949. The building next to the church, which has served since 1948 as a parsonage, then as an educational building. This new facility, presently in the planning stage, should be completed sometime in ; 1967. The congregation presently numbers 250 baptized members, of which 148 are confirmed members. This number includes some of the original members of the congregation in 1930. They are Mrs. F. G. Reichel and Mrs. E. M. Terry Jr. of Blytheville, Mr. Earl Wildy of Leachville, and Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Wildy and Charles Wildy of Etowah. Nearly half of the member families are stationed at Blytheville Air Force Base. While affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, it has been serving all Lutherans in this area since its origin. It cooperates with 6000 other Lutheran congregations through the United States and Canada in the production of the "Lutheran Hour" on radio (locally, at 9 a.m. Sundays over KLCN) and "This Is the Life" on television. The president of the congregation is John McCraeken of Osceola, and the Pastor is Rev. Sidney J. Ponseti of Blytheville.
