Visitors at the winter festival view a television set that sits within an ice sculpture of a television. Swimmers dive off platforms of ice during opening ceremonies. Cool it! Some folks like it cold at Chinese winter festival HARBIN, China (AP) — Hardy Chinese on Sunday dived into a hole cut in the ice on the Songhua River to celebrate the opening of the Harbin Ice Festival, famed for its ice sculptures. Twenty men and women plunged into the swimming pool-sized hole in temperatures that dipped to minus 22 at noon. Thousands of warmly dressed Harbin residents explored a 100-yard-long ice Great Wall, a sculptured ice palace, an ice gate tower and ice sculptures of items such as toothpaste tubes and television sets erected near the river. Government and Communist Party leaders hope the 2-month-long celebration will draw tourists to Harbin in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang. About 1.8 million people, including 2,000 overseas tourists, visited the festival in 1985. (AP) — Getting pictures of the planet Uranus isn't easy. Scientists must send instructions 1.8 billion miles to the Voyager 2 '. space probe, connect several antennas two-thirds the size of a football field and ask the Soviets to avoid accidentally ruining the reception. '. All that effort produces flickering images now showing on television monitors at Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Building 264 — mission control for Voyager 2's encounter with the solar system's third-largest planet. So far, Uranus looks like little more than a big tennis ball in photos . transmitted by Voyager's two television cameras, although they have detected the planet's five known moons, most of its nine known rings and hints of its weather patterns. But the National Aeronautics and Space Administration says the pictures and other data transmitted by Voyager 2 later this month will provide scientists with "more information about Uranus, its satellites and rings than has been learned since William Herschel discovered the planet March 13,1781." Voyager 2 was launched in 1977, explored Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1981. Today, it is more than 1.84 billion miles from Earth and 13.6 million miles from Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, speeding toward it at 39,991 mph. On Jan. 24, when the probe will be 1.86 billion miles from Earth, it will fly within 50,600 miles of Uranus. The transmission of instructions to aim Voyager's cameras is difficult because its main radio receiver failed in 1978 and its backup receiver partially failed, significantly reducing the probe's ability to lock onto radio signals from Earth. Project manager Dick Laeser said NASA surmounted that problem during Voyager 2's Jupiter and Saturn encounters and expects to do so during the Uranus flyby, although "it's going to be one of the hold-your- breath items." The spacecraft, powered by what Laeser calls a "baby atomic power plant," will send about 200 photos daily back to Earth. But the signal is transmitted with only 20 watts of power — "the power of 1 percent or less of the typical radio station" on WE ARE proud of our reputation fo the finest In workmanship In every memorial. (AP) — Christopher Isherwood, whose tales of pre-World War II Berlin were the basis of the Academy Award-winning film "Cabaret," has died at 81 of cancer. Isherwood, who was working on an untitled biography, died Saturday at his oceanview home Saturday, said artist Don Bachardy, his friend of 33 years. ' 'He holds the key to the English novel in his hands," W. Somerset Maugham once said of Isherwood, and Virginia Woolf called him "the great hope of English letters." No services were planned because "he didn't want any," Bachardy said. An acknowledged homosexual, Isherwood told People magazine in 1984: "Homosexuality suited me, and I have always felt at home with it. I don't doubt that I have a certain streak of heterosexuality in my nature, but it hasn't been my particular wish to pursue that." Isherwood was born to upper- middle class parents in High Lane, Cheshire, England, on Aug. 26, 1904. His father, Francis, a career officer in the British Army, was killed in World War I. He met W.H. Auden, with whom he co-authered several plays, at St. Edmund's School and spent two years at Cambridge before , being expelled in 1925 for writing scurrilous verse answers in his exams. By the age of 24, he had published "All the Conspirators," the first of his 25 books. He visited Auden in Berlin in 1929, where they took part in the city's avant garde nightlife and watched the rise of Nazism. He taught English in Berlin from 1930-33. The experience led to his 1935 collection, "The Berlin Stories," a semi-autobiographical work. The stories became the basis for the 1952 John Van Druten play, "I Am a Camera," and later the musical "Cabaret," which won the 1966-67 New York Drama Critics Circle Award. A 1972 film version with Liza Minelli and Michael York won eight Oscars. Earth, he said. To detect the weak signal, which takes 2% hours to reach Earth, NASA had to electronically connect dish- shaped antennas at each of three facilities in its Deep Space Network, located in California, Spain and Australia. Some of the antennas are 210 feet across, more than two-thirds of a football field's length. "The bigger the ear is, the better you can hear," Laeser said. NASA also needs to make sure Earth-orbiting satellites don't accidentally get in the way of the signals. "NASA actually sent a letter off to the Soviets asking them to do whatever they can to avoid interfering with us," Laeser said. "They've always cooperated." He said he expects no interference during the Uranus flyby because "there is no spacecraft in the field of view from any of our antennas." Voyager's cameras must use long exposures because the amount of sunlight hitting Uranus is four hundred times less than the amount that hits Earth, Laeser said. The probe will fly past Uranus at 45,000 mph. Bash planned for Elvis' 51st MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A bash with enough cake for thousands of fans, a movie premiere and the unveiling of a statue of "the king of rock 'n' roll" will mark the 51st anniversary Wednesday of Elvis Presley's birth. "We always prepare for several thousand people," said Jack Soden, executive director of Graceland, the Presley home that has become a tourist attraction and shrine for fans since the entertainer's death in 1977. "We don't expect as many people as we have during the summer or around the anniversary of his death, but we always have a lot of visitors and we'll have enough cake for all of them," Soden said. About 600 people a day tour Graceland during the winter, Soden said. But he expects as many as 3,000 or more Wednesday. During the day, Graceland Enterprises, which manages the estate for Presley's daughter and sole heir, Lisa Marie Presley, will premiere "If I Can Dream," a new film about Presley's life. The Presley statue, called "Journey to Graceland," will be unveiled Wednesday night during a $20- a-plate banquet honoring Mae Boren Axton and Tommy Durden, who wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" for Presley.
