spoke." Then one day on the field, he turned to Eber and in a labored voice said, "Coach, I'm happy." Eber chai'acterizes her coaching style as "gentle but firm. The players are very aware of being different, but it's a positive experience for them to see someone else stniggle." In these cases, Eber encom'ages her players to teach one another and to keep trying. "They don't often get a chance to be someone's helper." Eber had no idea how it would feel to be on the field as a coach. "I'm not a vei-y athletic pereon, and that's the best thing about Challenger: There's even a place for a coach like me who doesn't know much about baseball to be valued for my efforts." Eber leai-ns from the kids — "their spiiit, their skills and how incredibly determined they are." She adds \rith a laugh, "I don't think Sammy Sosa has a different expression on his face when he plays baseball." For those thinking about coaching on the community level, Eber has this advice: "Get involved. Nothing feels better than to be a pait of something wonderful. Whatever work goes into it pales in comparison to the joys of being involved and seeing all the kids having a great time."
