C6 Friday, May 19, 1995 MONEY The Salina Journal Dow Jones average plunges 81 points By The Associated Press NEW YORK — The stock market tumbled Thursday in the most serious sell-off in six months, as investors grew alarmed that the recent steep drop in interest rates may have ended. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 81.96 points to close at 4,340.64. That was the worst decline since the blue-chip index fell 91.52 points on Nov. 22 and was the third straight daily loss following six consecutive record highs. The sell-off was aggressive and widespread, with declining issues leading advancers by a 5-to-2 margin on the New York Stock Exchange. NYSE volume was moderately heavy at 348.37 million shares as of 4 p.m., against 347.91 million in the previous session. The steep drop in the Dow caused the New York Stock Exchange to impose restrictions on The Associated Press A trader pauses on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, when the Dow Jones average plunged. computerized program trading in mid-afternoon. Broad-market indexes also fell. The NYSE's composite index fell 3.72 to 279.80. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index slid 7.49 to 519.58. The Nasdaq composite index lost 7.87 to 864.06, while the American Stock Exchange's market value index descended 2.07 to 487.45. Stock prices headed lower at the opening bell as bond prices lost ground, pushing interest rates higher. The 30-year Treasury bond was down % point late in the day, pushing its yield, which rises when prices fall, up to 6.89 percent. Bonds slipped after the government reported disappointing trade deficit information. Although the deficit fell slightly in March to $9.12 billion, from a revised $9.15 billion in February, analysts had expected a bigger decline. Exports rose 5 percent to $65.34 billion, while imports went up 4 percent to $74.46 billion. "The market has rallied excep- tionally over the last six months, and much of it is justified as the result of sharply lower long-term interest rates, but it looks like we're coming to the end of that interest rate decline," said James Solloway, director of research for Argus Research in New York. Long-term rates, especially in the market for U.S. Treasury issues, have been falling for months. Low rates make corporate borrowing cheaper and can boost profits, which enhances stock values. Solloway said the outlook is now for stable rates in the short term. In addition, economic growth is slowing, causing forecasts for second-quarter profit growth to be slower than the sharp rises in the first quarter, he said. The sell-off was intensified by Friday's expiration of options tied to stock indexes, which often adds to volatility. NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE Name Oiv. PE Vol. Las! InClPd 1255111-16 + 3-16 XCL Ltd 2792 ': — 1-16 Pizza Hut to move more work to Dallas head office By The Associated Press WICHITA — Pizza Hut plans to move several corporate functions and about 300 employees of its headquarters staff to Dallas, the Wichita- based chain said Thursday. The move will leave about 700 employees at the Wichita headquarters, a company spokesman said. But Wichita employment is expected to return to its current level of about 1,000 when Pizza Hut's parent company, PepsiCo, opens a new company at the Wichita offices. That company — PepsiCo Restaurant Services Co. — will provide accounting, payroll and other functions for Pepsi- Go's restaurants, including Pizza Huts, Taco Bells and KFC outlets. Pizza Hut's executive offices, financial planning, marketing, operations, business development, law and human resources departments will move to Dallas.
