is the area wherein most of the history of Kith and Kin of Smith, Williams, Taylor, Easley Families of Amite County, Miss, takes place. Compiled and edited by Austin B. Smith, P.O. Box 821, Rayville, La. 71269, it is 84x11 printed one side only, a thick spiral-bound volume, $10.00 plus postage.

The first section is 62 pages of family history and lineage, followed by an index, then 213 pages of family charts. "When hostilities between the American colonies and England reached the state where an armed conflict became necessary, large numbers of Tories of the New England section moved their families to the Mississippi section in and around Natchez, Miss. It was through these wealthy landowners that the large plantations came into existence." "Prior to that time, small groups of Germans and Swiss farmers had been induced by the French to take up acreages in the territory. In 1798 when the Territory of Mississippi was formed from the western section of what was then Georgia, it included what later became the Territory of Alabama. Mississippi became a state in 1817." "At the completion of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 thousands of settlers rushed into Mississippi for the available new land.

Auston Wayne Smith, born 1814 Amite County, was the son of Ambrose Smith of Virginia, born 1770 and Zilpha Cotton Smith, born S. Car.

A descendant, James Ellison Smith, married Mary Emma Williams, 1865 and was a Confederate soldier, a prisoner of war held in New Orleans who kept an extensive diary picturing the Reconstruction Years. John Dunbar Williams and wife, Isabella came to Amite Co. from Maryland as did others of this family. Beverly Dunn Taylor, son of David and Nancy Jordan Taylor, was born in St. Helena Ph.

in 1824. Before the Civil War he had a freight business between New Orleans and Jackson, moving then to Catahoula Ph. where he began the practice of medicine. His ancestor, Captain Thomas Taylor, born in England, came to Virginia in the early 1600's. Their descendants moved into North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Robert Easley, born about 1663 in England, came to Virginia some pick. Choose him only after asking for bids from several other contractors and after checking his reliability.
