By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com The fact that Minden is contending for a Class 4A playoff spot is perhaps the focus of first-year Tide coach David Feaster's thoughts tliis week. The District 14A team pulled off an early-season surprise win over Springhill, but Minden is on a two-game losing streak brought on largely by injuries. That's bad news for a school that had a short roster to begin with after a coaching change.

Minden is 6-3 heading into the regular season's final week. Feaster is hopeful hell get some names back on the depth chart this week. Running back Kay Jones is one player likely to return against Neville after missing just over a game. His partner in the backfield, Brandon Walker, is in the same boat and has Feaster missed the same time. Walker has a shoulder injury, while Jones' is an ankle.

Both have had pain, but Feaster says he is "planning on both of them playing right now." Jones was headed for 1,000 yards when he was hurt Feaster believes having those running backs against Northwood might have made a difference in the 30-0 loss. "Sometimes, in a ball game like that, a running back breaks a big one and can get some momentum going," he says. Instead, the Tide lost big in a game in which the offense turned the ball over five times to the visitors. One was a fumble returned for a touchdown and a 10-0 Falcons lead by a Northwood defender. Minden had similar offensive troubles the previous week against Bastrop, though the Rams were admittedly more of a powerhouse opponent Bastrop held Minden to 55 yards of total offense.

Mansfield The Wolverines have probably lost their chance at a District 1-3A title with the loss to Benton at home, but there are still definite playoff hopes as Game 10 against Booker T. Washington approaches. Defensive end Chris Anderson says the team knows what went wrong against the Tigers. "We just missed tackles and made too many mistakes," he says. "Everybody makes mistakes, but we just made some big ones at the last of the game.

We're just going to come out and work hard, watch films, evaluate the films and do the best we can this week against BTW." Anderson and his teammates GREG ELS0 UOHER. FOOTBALL Greg Nelson scored three times in the Pelicans' 30-12 District 1-2A victory. He had touchdown runs of .2, 57 and 2 yards and gained 116 yards overall. I still." Feaster says. "We re just trying to finish the season as strong as pos- sible." Minden has also been without a starting linebacker and free safety most 01 tne season.

Willie Penton was a first-team member of The Times All-Area Foot- ball Team last year at linebacker. with a stomach virus," he says. "It won't be that way this time. They're a better team than what came up here a couple of weeks ago." Tensas quarterback Jason White has thrown for 1,200 yards, but Powell says the team is most effective running the option game. Knowing that, it could be important to get a big jump on Tensas, just as Claiborne did with a 140 start two weeks ago.

It's possible that could give the visitors doubts about their ability to beat the Rebels. That's got to be in the back of their mind a little bit," Powell says, "just like I don't want ours thinking it's going to be that easy this time around. I can't say they're not a come-from-behind team, because they have done that, but they're pretty much a ball-control offense." I) 1. DBtllVE. BASKETBALL DJ.

Minden's Kay Jones (foreground) was Even with Jones and Walker on the bench, Tide fans have plenty to remember from them this season, "Kay Jones has had a great year," Feaster says. "He was having some super games and getting a lot of notoriety, but a the credit goes to anybody, it our offensive line. That's where all the AREA allowed an opposing runner to gain 100 yards or more for the first time in four weeks. Demond Wheatley rolled up 163 with two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Bossier's Weldon Brown and Corey George had both gone over 100 when the Wolverines and Bearkats played a nondistrict game. Logansport Gary Cason put himself in the record books in the Tigers' 37-8 victory over Northwood Lena on Friday. He kicked his 70th extra point, a school record. At the same time, Logansport put itself in the Class 1A playoffs as an automatic invitee. Logansport could still tie with LaSalle at 4-1 if the Tigers were to lose to St Mary in the regular season's final week, but Logansport has the head-to-head advantage in the standings. Claiborne Academy The Rebels have been here before. Two weeks ago, in the last week of the regular season for the MPSA, Claiborne Academy and Tensas Academy faced off, just as they will this week in the second round of the playoffs. The Rebels won that game, 39-7, but coach Ronnie Powell says that score doesn't mean much now. "They had three or four boys out FACES TMSIIABELL B1EM ILLE.
