School officials, who have come under Are for using on-campus soda sales to meet their budgets, say they are delighted with the initial response from students. "The taste is really good," said Jonathan Angelo, a junior at Granada Hills High School in suburban Los Angeles. "It's better than school milk." Besides Southern California, machines have been installed at middle and high schools in Austin, Texas; Boston; Gmaha, Neb., and Miami. After the test ends this spring, the industry hopes the results will persuade bottlers and schools nationwide to put in similar machines. Flavored milk has more calories and as much sugar as soda, but milk also has a variety of minerals and nutrients, including calcium and vitamins A and D. A 16-ounce bottle of calcium-fortified chocolate milk has 460 calories, more than double that of a typical cola but nearly a day's supply of calcium. Susan Ruland, a spokeswoman for the "Got Milk?" campaign with its hip celebrity ads, says, "You've got to get the milk where people are and in the right packaging." Teen-agers could be a critical market for the dairy industry, which has been working to reverse a decades-long slide in milk consumption nationwide. U.S. milk consumption peaked at 32 gallons per person in 1970. In 1999, it was less than 24 gallons per person. The high-tech vending machines are equipped with global positioning systems that allow daily sales to be tracked to the bottle. The "Got Milk?" campaign is authorized and monitored by the federal government and paid for by producers. Ads have featured dozens of celebrities wearing the famous milk mustaches, from singer Britney Spears, to baseball star Mark McGwire and actor Matthew Fox. The test has not gone without glitches. Chocolate is the favorite flavor every­ where, but tastes vary by market. Coffee- flavored milk accounts for about 30 percent of sales in Boston. Plain milk is available in all the machines but typically is the least popular. Low-fat varieties also are stocked. At Granada Hills High in California, "the demand is there without a doubt. They love the product," said assistant principal Robert Garcia. Dear Kansas Consumer: My Consumer Protection division contacted the hearing aid dispenser. At first, we were told the company's 30-day exchange policy had expired, but finally the company agreed to refund the purchase price of the hearing aids, minus a standard fitting and dispensing fee that is rarely refundable. Thousands of Kansans suffer from some kind of hearing loss and rely on hearing aids. A proper fit is key for comfort, considering most hearing aids are worn each day for long hours. If you feel you may be suffer­ ing from a loss of hearing, the first thing you should do is see a doctor. There are many causes of hearing loss. Sometimes a loss of hearing can be a symptom or indication of a serious underlying illness. The actual cause of the hearing loss must be determined before you can be fitted for hearing aids. Once you have received verification of your hearing loss and the doctor feels hearing aids are the best remedy for you, you will need to visit a dispenser. Dispensers will fit you for the hearing aids and discuss how much correction you can expect with them. Ask your doctor about dispensers he or she recommends. Then you can check with my office and the Better Business Bureau to see if we have any complaints against the company you are considering. Not only do you need to know how the hearing aids will work for you, but you also need to be familiar with and understand the terms by which you will purchase the hearing aids. Be sure you know whether there is a trial period to allow you the chance to bring any fitting or performance problems to the attention of the dispenser. Often, this may depend on the manufacturer of the hearing aids. Also, ask detailed questions about the warranty and whether it is being provided by the dispenser or the manufacturer. Make sure you carefully read and understand the contract before signing. BRIEFLY GM to recall 6,000 sport utility vehicles DAYTON, Ohio — General " Motors Corp. plans to recall 6,000 sport utility vehicles because of a safety concern over a suspension part, telling drivers of the models to stop driving them immediately GM also will temporarily idle the plant that produces the vehicles: 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazers, 2002 GMC Envoys or 2002 Oldsmobile Bravadas. GM spokesman Mike Morrissey said the part in question is on the lower control arm of the front suspension. He said there have been no reports of crashes or injuries. Baby products maker fined $1.3 million INDIANAPOLIS — Baby products maker Cosco will pay a record $1.3 million in fines to settle charges it did not report safety defects that led to more than 300 injuries and the deaths of two children. The fine is the biggest penalty ever levied by the Consumer Product Safety Commission against a manufacturer of children's products. Cosco is based in Colimibus, Ind., and is North America's biggest manufacturer of car seats, strollers and toddler beds. Five products were involved, most of them manufactured from 1994 to 1998: a crib, a crib mattress, a tandem stroller, a car seat/carrier and a high chair made by Cosco. Fresh-sliced apples may be contaminated Fresh Products Northwest, LLC, is recalling its "Crunch Pak" Fresh Sliced Apples packages because they may be contaminated with Listeria mono­ cytogenes. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, but no illnesses have been reported. The apples under recall are packaged in 2-ounce, 6-ounce, 6.75-ounce and 1-pound poly bags and 3-pound and 30-pound poly bags in shipping boxes. The product can be identified by the "Crunch Pak" brand and "best if used by" date of March 21 through and including April 11." The product was distributed to wholesalers and retailers in 17 states, including Kansas and Missouri. Consumers who have purchased the product are urged to return the packages for a full refund.
