PAOKTWO The Daily Inter lake Kalispell Montana Sunday September 2 1973 Editorial Page 3SW Ben en Broadsides BMIMI Not Like They Used To As the prices for the lacquered beauties go up Americans are becoming commensurately dissatisfied with the workmanship and materials being used in their automobiles Since both trends seem to be continuing without promise of relief we consulted Morho the Malevolent local clairvoyant and doortodoor representative for Snap on Lingerie for Mature Women to see where it might lead The venerable seer constructed this scene of what the car buyer of the future might encounter as he ventured on the lot in search of a new extension of his sexuality "Well a good good afternoon to you sir" said the salesman "It's always a pleasure to show someone our brand new Belchfire Super Sport" "I was interested in something er a little more serviceable" "Well just come right this way" the salesman snapped as he grabbed the customer firmly by the necktie and led him to the gleaming blue object which had the stance of a Peruvian beetle in full mating dance eeling his resistance ebbing the customer reached out to give the sleek beauty an affectionate kick in the tire only to have the tire explode and knock him to the pavement "What happened?" the customer asked incredulously "What's that tire made of?" "It's new this said the salesman as he deftly motioned for a mechanic to affix a new tire on the vehicle "The tires are rubber coated papier mache The engineers say they make for a better power weight ratio and the cost analysts said it saves $200 per car on the cost of building the car" "A man could get killed" said the customer as he leaned against the fender to regain his composure The fender however gave way and his hand passed through it only to puncture the other tire and send salesman and customer to the pavement again "Now what the "There there" the salesman said "You have to realize that these are cars and not trucks They can't take the same kind of treatment" "That fenderl" the incredulous customer cried "It it's no thicker than aluminum foil" "It is aluminum foil" "Maybe I'd better look at a truck Grabbing his customer by the tie again the salesman dragged him toward a metallic rod pickup on the other side of the lot as a swarm of mechanics and body men converged on the damaged sport coupe "Now sure this will be more to your liking" the salesman said "These Belchfire Clydesdales are tough trucks" "Are the tires real rubber?" "Most certainly" the salesman said confidently "We even used real steel in the body" "I'll try it" the customer said as he climbed into the driver's seat and brought the door closed with the tinny slam He realized something was awry when he looked out the windshield only to see the wide expanse of hood and some sky As he climbed out the middle of the truck which had sagged to the ground slowly rose back to nearly its original position "I thought you said this was made out of steel" the customer said with pronounced irritation "Well er the sheet metal yes" the salesman equivocated "but the frame is a new material they're experimenting with It's" "I want to hear about it the customer yelled over his shoulder as he stalked off the lot "People just don't the salesman said "If we put everything in a car these people want price ourselves out of the market" Hal Boyle Gould Reverses Trend SUN CTTY CENTER la (AP) Every year thousands of young people from all owr America migrate to New York City hoping to find fame or fortune in the largest metropolis Jerry Gould a native New Yorker reversed the trend He left Manhattan because he could no longer stand it found opportunity in lorida and now is one of the larger home builders simply got tired of being pushed about and intimidated in New he remarked people who like it feel it is the best place in the world to be but I feel sorry for them are a lot of cultural advantages in the big city but 1 resent the fact that most of the people who live there make enough money to enjoy them Unless you have money in New York the fun? true in lorida and other parts of the country Here you have to be rich to play a little golf go fishing or just sit and enjoy the cli It sour grapes that led Jerry who had spent three years in the Army during World War II as a medical technician aboard a hospital ship to pull up stakes and move south in 1950 He was a highly successful advertising salesman in Man hattan and had saved up enough money to buy a part nership in his retail clothing firm in Miami Within a short time he also had be come a partner in a leading ad vertising firm and then entered the booming land development field in 1955 Since then he has buit 6000 homes in lorida and else where A pioneer in obtaining legista tion to outlaw shady land sale schemes he prefers the role of rather than that of a promoter merely selling land on the installment plan He and a partner designed and built Lehigh Acres a com munity of some 15000 people 1 3 miles from ort Myers But Jerry expects Sun City Center here to be his real life monument in community devel opment As president of the Development Corp he bought the 2000 acresite from the Del Webb Corp founder of Sun City Ariz The site has since been enlarged to 11000 62 Per Cent Agree In Poll NEW YORK (AP) The Harris Poll says 62 per cent of those it surveyed recently agreed with President contention that the Watergate affair should be turned over to the courts The poll reported Monday that 32 per cent disagreed when asked if it were to turn the whole question of Water gate over to the courts and al low the President to concen acres and by 1980 Gould ex pects 30000 people will be liv ing there in three adjoining communities far enough 1 feel to project for the said Jerry we have room to put 60000 residences here and a populationof 150000 Then he added candidly: 49 now and 1 may not live to see At present Sun City Center is largely a retirement town limit ed to residents aged 50 or over where children under 18 can come only as visitors Later segments appealing to younger family groups are planned as well as an area for small ranch estates The developers also hope to draw residents from such near by cities as Tampa Sarasota and St Petersburg Each year Gould makes sev eral business trips back to his native city enjoy he acknowl edged York is a great place to visit but His shrug finished the sentence Irate on more important However the Harm organ ization said respondents split 51 to 45 per cent in favor of renewing the Senate Watergate hearings into ty during the 1972 presi dential campaign But 51 per cent opposed continued tele vising of the hearings orty four per cent wanted the prac tice continued Another poB by the Opinion Research Corp of Princeton NJ showed 53 per cent of those questioned were in favor of halting the Senate hearings 35 per cent were opposed and 12 per cent had no opinion The Opinion Research poll was based on 1017 nationwide telephone interviews of persons over age 18 vbtnhed Mondoy through riday the grain farmer was In a bind for years ao glad to sett him "get well" I do know that an agriculture with surplus pro duction capacity (and quite sure we have this capacity yet) will be a boom and bust agriculture without adequate supply price programs Also high meat prices in particular may trigger the wide adoption by consumers of "meat The hamburger quarter section of land my dad bought three times during the 1930s because when he had a crop there was no price and when there was no crop the price was groat Since the 1930s prices have been relatively stable because of government programs which insured supply and price Of course these same programs pretty much eliminated the machinations of the major US grain speculators But the hue and cry of politico economist types about the $3 billion to $6 billion annual expense Involved In assuring a plentiful stable food supply eventually resulted In unrealistically low prices for basic feed grains $125 a bushel wheat and 80 cents a bushel barley reeked of the thirties In the long run the real tragedy for agriculture of $5 a bushel wheat or 75 cents a pound fat cattle may be the loss of any political support for adequate supply price The present situation In farm prices Is confusion pereonlflod It resembles a new stylo life adjustment toy no matter how you put It together Il comes out wrong There Is so much contradictory information running around loose about supply nnd demand for such basic commodities as wheat beef and soybeans that no matter what is predicted going to be wrong A few guessers arc going to come out looking like prophets nnd most of them will look like idiots but I he speculators are having a field dny People who never owned a pound of beef wheat or soybeans own some futures The situation has some similarities to the late 1920s but wo all know that happen again! making one prediction prices are going to go up nnd down sometime In the next few years A statement like that should insure my reputation ns SILVERTHORN DAIRY REGISTERED stretchers are an example but there are others As much as 10 years ago soybean protein had been successfully restructured into protein fibers closely resembling meats accustomed to countries to buy That coupled with world wide adverse crop conditions really developed strong demand for US farm commodities groat for our balance of payments but has caused some dtecombobulation here at homo One thing doos concern me A stable agriculture price wise helps to stabilize the economy of the country ns a whole That should bo evident now to all but the dimmest dinner table economist ood is still a substantial Item In all family budgets and when the price of it fluctuates widely It wreaks havoc with prices of many other things Union contracts with cost of living escalators almost guarantee that the price of a car will be affected by the price of food A boom bust agricultural economy serves no decent purpose except that of the speculator 1 feel like Mcthusaleh talking about one Wed Sept 5 10am On the farm at Charlo Mont er an economist of note The key to what happens in the next three years is the amount of surplus productive capacity that may have been tied up in various government conserving acres programs and the quantity of basic agricultural commodities that we sett abroad When the dollar was nnd subsequently devalued it made our a
