2A APRIL 16. 1986 MSMMERS THE NATION From News-Press Wire Services Senate confirms new deputy CIA chief WASHINGTON The Senate voted Tuesday to confirm Robert M. Gates as the new deputy director of theCentral Intelligence Agency. Gates was confirmed quickly and without objection after being praised by Sen. Patrick Leahy as "an extremely professional member of our intelligence community." Leahy, is vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The voice vote decision by the full Senate came less than a week after the panel voted 10-0 to approve Gates, 42, as the replacement for John M. McMahon. McMahon, a 34-year year CIA veteran, resigned in February and Gates, a career professional whose most recent post was deputy CIA director for intelligence, was named by CIA director William Casey to be the new No. 2 man. After McMahon's resignation, there were reports that his departure stemmed from discontent with President Reagan's policies.

Victim describes horror of'NightStalker'attack LOS ANGELES A young woman testified Tuesday in a hearing in the "Night Stalker" case how she was raped and beaten by a profanity-spewing man who killed her husband and repeatedly ordered her to "swear upon Satan." The woman, who was on the stand about an hour, seemed not to notice defendant Richard Ramirez until the prosecutor asked if she saw the man who attacked her. The woman gazed around, sucked in her breath and almost shouted, "Oh yeah him!" as she pointed toward Ramirez. She was the sixth Night Stalker victim to identify Ramirez at the preliminary hearing, which will decide whether he stands trial. Ramirez, 26, is charged in Los Angeles County with 14 murders, five attempted murders, seven rapes, five acts of oral copulation, seven of sodomy, three lewd acts on children, two kidnappings, 1 9 burglaries and six robberies. FBI releases tape, sketch of tampering suspect HOUSTON Two composite sketches and a tape recording of "Gary," the man suspected in the recent poison contamination of Contac, Tel-drin and Dietac capsules, were released Tuesday by the FBI.

"This individual's actions are considered to represent a grave danger to society and the FBI continues a very intensive investigation to identify and apprehend him," said W. Douglas Gow, special agent in charge of the Houston FBI office. The FBI has established a toll-free telephone number (800) 222-308 1 for people to call with information about the case, he said. The sketches are based on information from several witnesses who believe they saw a man place capsules in an Orlando store March 1 9. The sketches show a white male of undetermined age.

In one sketch, he is wearing sunglasses. Gow said a caller identifying himself as Gary has made at least 1 0 phone calls. Swiss government orders freeze on Duvalier assets BERN, Switzerland Swiss authorities on Tuesday ordered a freeze on assets held by deposed Haitian President Jean-Claude Duvalier. The Haitian government asked in a telex to the Swiss Federal Police Office that Duvalier assets in Geneva, Zurich and Lausanne be blocked, the Justice Ministry said in a statement. The statement did not name the banks or say how much money might be invovled.

On Monday, a Justice Ministry official said Swiss officials met last week with Haitian representatives who are tracking Duvalier's assets. Duvalier fled his Caribbean island nation Feb. 7 and is now in France, which agreed to accept him on a temporary basis. Pierre Sam, Haiti's newly appointed ambassador to the United States, has estimated the Duvalier family's fortune at up to $800 million. High Court Judge Sir Nicolas Browne-Wilkinson said such a disclosure could be ordered only where "necessary in the interests of justice." The order was sought by Handmade Films, co-owned by ex-Beatle George Harrison, which is making "Shanghai Surprise" starring Madonna and Penn. The Daily Express published the photos Feb. 28 and March 1.

After Handmade Films won a ruling that it owned the copyright on the pictures, the paper admitted that a copyright breach had occurred and surrendered the photos to the film company.
