"I think it's terrible," said WiUiam Fugazy, chairman of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations and a Giuliani supporter. "To compare him to a fascist, I think, is a disgrace." In a departure from his usual schtick, Leno on Thursday labeled Giuliani a "fascist" for appointing a decency commission to determine whether certain pieces of art are offensive. The comedian compared Giuliani's efforts to Adolf Hitler's crusade to remove what he called "degenerate art" from German museums in the early years of the Third Reich. 'Spider' crawls to theater near you LOS ANGELES — Morgan Freeman said he didn't read James Patterson's novel "Along Came a Spider" before making the film of the same name. FREEIVIAN "Along Came a Spider," co-starring Monica Potter, opened nationwide Friday Actress revisits TV insecurities LOS ANGELES — With her skimpy outfits and big blond hair, Christina Applegate played the quintessential bombshell for 10 years on the Fox sitcom "Married... With Children." But that's not the way she perceived herself. Playing Kelly Bundy until the show went off the air in 1997, she believed she looked "ugly and fat." "It's so sad because we all go through that bad, awkward phase, and I just had mine documented, which was reaUy unfortunate and fortunate all at the same time," Applegate said. She co-stars in the comedy "Just Visiting," which opened in theaters Friday. Rooster is a bird out of water in L.A. apartment Dear Ann Landers: A while back, you printed a letter from a man whose neighbor kept a rooster in his apartment. He was tired of being awakened every morning at 4 a.m. by # the rooster's crowing. I am very hard of hearing, and there isn't an alarm clock in existence that will wake me up. I often set two alarm clocks, five minutes apart, and I still oversleep because I do not hear them. Will you please tell me where I can buy a rooster? I am prepared to get a cage and follow instructions on what to feed it. 1 live in an apartment building in Los Angeles, and if there is a law that might prohibit me from having a pet rooster, I'd like to know about it. Thanks for your help, Ann. — S.D. in Los Angeles Dear S.D.: If you live in an apartment building in Los Angeles and buy a roost- ANN LANDERS Crealors Syndicate inc. er to wake you up in the morning, you will hear plenty — from your neighbors and the landlord, in that order. Since there are laws restricting the housing of farm animals in most urban areas, you might hear from the police, as well. There are alarm clocks that are extra- loud and others that will cause your pillow to vibrate. If those don't work, perhaps a friend would be willing to telephone you in the morning. Or look into hiring a "wake-up" service that charges a modest fee. If you are taking sleeping medication, see your doctor about cutting back. If you are not on medication, take comfort in the fact that a lot of insomniacs out there are envious of you. Dear Ann Landers: I am a gay male in my late 20s, happily committed to my partner of three years. All our friends and family members know that "Dale" and I are in a gay and stable relationship. Here's the problem: Every now and again, some female friend will ask Dale to be her "date" to a wedding or event. I think it's fine for friends to help each other out, but it bothers me that none of these women consider my feelings. I am not asking that I be included in these invitations, but I do think these women should ask if it's OK with me to be without Dale for an evening or weekend. After all, if a woman were asking a female friend's husband to escort her, she would surely ask the wife's permission first. By ignoring me, it feels as though our relationship is not being taken seriously Is there anything I can do about this? — Conflicted in the Northeast Dear Conflicted: You are right. These women should consider your feelings when "borrowing" Dale, and you should discuss this with him to let him know how you feel. I checked with some real authorities and was told as follows: "We would not mind if the significant other agreed to 'help out' a female friend in a crisis situation, but to be asked to serve as an escort on an ongoing basis would NOT be acceptable." Dear Ann Landers: You are usually on target, but I think your aim was a little off concerning "A.P. in New York." The writer said it's a waste to carve roses and swans out of food that no one is supposed to eat. You disagreed, saying decorative food is beautiful and adds a festive touch to fancy parties and weddings. Maybe so, Ann, but wouldn't it be more sensible to give those cantaloupes and watermelons to the unfortunates searching through the garbage cans outside the caterer's kitchen? Food is a precious commodity, and we carinot afford to confuse it with art. — Detroit Doc Dear Detroit: It may be sensible, but if someone pays for those cantaloupes and watermelons, they can do with them as they wish, I agree people shouldn't waste food, but a lovely work of art isn't a waste. It is a celebration for the eyes. Write to Ann Landers at P.O. Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611.
