A ground search in the area of Hinton, Just west of Oklahoma City is to be conducted by Oscar E. Monnig, a Fort Worth astronomer, Dr.

La Paz said. The meteor Is believed to have disintegrated in Oklahoma because there it was very bright, caused windows to rattle and emitted a loud roar. In Waco, where several persons saw the flaming meteor. Dr. Walter J.

Williams, astronomer at Baylor university, said that it probably was an early arrival of the annual shower of Leonides which usually fall on the earth about Nov. 19. It was the Leonides, he said, that caused "stars to fall on Alabama" about 100 years ago. In Texas, the meteor was Righted at widely scattered points. Residents at Wichita Falls, Gainesville, Plainview, Lubbock, Post, Texarkana, Tyler, Waco, Big Springs, San Angelo, Bolivar in northwest Denton county.

Fort Worth, Dallas and other'cities reported seeing the fireball. At most all points, observers said that the meteor seemed to be flying low and to have fallen nearby. At Tyler the object appeared to have fallen a few miles from the airport where It was Residents at Waco said it appeared to fall near the Brazos river. Dr. Williams said, however that the height of a meteor is often deceptive and often gives the appearance of being much closer than it actually is.

Tom R. Hickman, former chief of the Texas rangers, who lives south of Gainesville, said that the meteor had the appearance of a rocket, was aluminum in color, and gave off red and blue sparks. J. R. Coker, field representative for the state department of public welfare, who saw the object between Athens and Tyler, said it had a head resembling the flame of a welding torch, following by an orange-colored flame.

He described It as being "about as long as a telephone pole." Several observers said the meteor emitted puffs of black smoke as it disintegrated. At Fort Worth, Monnig said a meteor of that size would create a "shock wave" of sound from -10 15 miles on each side of its course as it traveled at supersonic speed through tht atmosphere. The shock wave, Monnig said, Is heard as a jarring boom, -trailing off into a roar, as was heard in the vicinity of Hinton. The detonation was so strong that one Oklahoma motorist said that it jseemed to almost I knock his car off the road. Because many people be- lieved the meteor was a burn- ing plane, search for a fallen aircraft was started at several l-cities.

Two planes were sent out from the Reese Air Force I base at Lubbock to search an area north of Post but found nothing. Tex. The blazing fireball, sighted about 7:10 a.m. (CST), was seen In Oklahoma, the northern half of Texas, eastern New Mexico, southwestern Arkansas, and Southeastern Colorado. The brilliant object was so bright an Oklahoma bus driver was forced to stop his vehicle until he recovered his vision.
