8 THE NEWS-PRESS, SPORTS, FRIDAY, MAY 20, 2005 GOLF Several youths take shot at U.S. Open Call made for women's qualifying age rule AF2 LEAGUE Firecats trade for ex-NFLer BY CHRIS UMPIERRE The Florida Firecats traded for a massive lineman with NFL experience Thursday. The arenafootball2 league team acquired Antonio Dingle from the Central Valley (Calif.) Coyotes in exchange for lineman Antonio SherrelL Dingle will be active when the Cats (5-1) play at the Louisville Fire on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Dingle was picked in the seventh round (214 overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1999 NFL Draft. The University of Virginia graduate was selected one pick after Green Bay Packers wide-out Donald Driver.

Dingle, 26, has had stints with the Packers, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers. He has played for the Arena Football League's New York Dragons and with Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Rochester and Greensboro in the af2. "He's a huge pickup for us," Cats coach Kevin Bonis said "Anytime we can pick up a guy with his experience and talent, it can only make us better. He's a natural on the defensive side of the ball, and we've been looking for a way to get more pressure on the quarterbacks." Sherrell played in two games with the Cats. Central Valley is expected to deal him to South Georgia.

Sheehan shot an 8-under 62 for a two-shot lead.

Sheehan bogeyed the final hole and just missed becoming the fourth player in three years to shoot a 61 at Colonial. Sheehan starts with 62 Round gives him 2-shot advantage at Colonial Kids Junior Championship, shot a 77, missing a playoff for the final qualifying berths by oneshot There's a time to bring a child out when she's ready to be brought out And she's not ready to be brought out," Said Cusimano, who played in the 1999 U.S. Women's Open and the LPGA Championship from 2002-2004. "I had to be so mentally tough. You had to walk away from it (Thompson), but you had to be so mentally tough." Thompson's father, Scott, who caddies for his daughter, said veteran players haven't been unwelcoming to his daughter, but he can see disapproval on some faces.

"I can't blame them," Thompson said. They're worked hard to get where they're at They don't want to see a squirt come out and shoot a good score. But these young kids get better every year." Southwest Floridians joining Cusimano in advancing to sectional qualifying were Fort Myers' Valerie Osborn (73), Naples' Lorie McCabe (73) and Heather Sterling (75) and Estero's Kristy Gleason (75) and Meghan Spero (76), who birdied die first hole of a playoff after nine players tied for the final four qualifying berths. Naples' Courtney Figueroa, 16, a sophomore at SL John Neumann, also shot 76 but bogeyed die first playoff hole and did not advance. McCabe and Spero are among those who will attempt to advance through 36-hole sectional qualifying at Heathrow Country Club in Orlando on Monday, June 13.

Twelve contestants in Thursday's local qualifying round for the U.S. Women's Open one seventh of the 84-player field at Imperial Golf Club in Naples were 16 or younger. Only one of those players, Megan McChrystaL 16, of Stuart, made it through to next month's sectional qualifying, but the presence of so many young players wasn't without controversy. Fort Myers resident Dede "Cusimano, one of six contestants from Southwest Florida to be among the 23 players to advance to sectional qualifying, said she was going to write a letter to the United States Golf Association arguing in favor of a minimum age limit for Open qualifying. Cusimano, 45, the LPGA's national club professional champion in 2003, was upset by playing partner Lexi Thompson, 10, of Coral -Springs, crying at times during her round and being unfamiliar with the rules in one instance.

"I'm out here trying to qualify for the Women's U.S. Opea This is a big deal to me," said Cusimano, a California native and Fort Myers resident for three years. "Obviously her score was wonderful. She's going to be a great little player. She just needs a lot of maturing." Cusimano shot even-par 72 to finish two shots back of medalist Kelly Lagedrost of Brooksville.

Thompson, whose resume includes three victories in her age group in the Doral Publix Junior Championship and two titles in the U.S. Brandt Jobe and Kevin Na. Defending champion Steve Flesch shot a 79, ending his record streak of sub-par Colonial rounds at eight and putting him in serious jeopardy of missing the cut He was 113th in the 114-player field. Bonita Springs resident Peter Jacobsen shot a 73 and is tied for 89th. SYBASE CLASSIC NEW ROCHELLE, NY.

-Christina Kim shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Siew-Ai Lim after the first round of the Sybase Classic. The 21-year-old Kim has only one top-10 finish this year and is 33rd on the money list a year after winning the Longs Drugs Challenge and finishing 19th in earnings. Trying to become the fourth player in three years to shoot a 61 at Colonial, Sheehan pulled his drive at the 433-yard 18th hole into the trees. His approach landed just behind the green, and he stubbed his first chip shot Instead of a Colonial record, Sheehan settled for his best PGA Tour round and also matched the low first round on tour this year.
