R.E.M. heads back out on tour SAN FRANCISCO — The R.E.M. tour picked up where it left off in March, when drummer Bill Berry was stricken with a brain aneurysm. "We finally named the tour," singer Michael Stipe joked to a San Francisco crowd Monday night. "We'd like to welcome you to the first show of Aneurysm '95." The band showed videos of X-rays and CAT scans on a large screen as it performed "I Don't Sleep, I Dream." Stipe sang about "some medicine for my headache" to a beeping EKG backbeat. Berry was back behind the drums after recuperating from brain surgery. The tour was suspended after he fell ill during a show in Lausanne, Switzerland. Drug charges rear again for Earle NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With a heroin conviction be- iimd him, country rocker Steve Earle has been hit with crack possession charges. ^Earle was arrested on the heroin charge July 25 and released on bail. Later that day, police allegedly found crack in his car. He was indicted Friday. Earle's manager, John Dotson, said Tuesday the new cocaine and drug paraphernalia charges were a surprise. "Speaking with his attorney, it Earle was clearly all of our understanding that there was not going to be any pursuit of these charges," Dotson said. "I'm not sure where in the system communications failed us, but it did." Earle, 40, was released from jail in September after serving a month on the heroin conviction. Designer fined for hanky-panky PARIS — Fashion designer Francesco Smalto was fined $120,000 Tuesday for supplying call girls to the president of Gabon. Smalto was convicted earlier this year of recruiting the women for Omar Bongo between 1990 and 1993, during the designer's trips to the West African nation to sell Bongo clothes. Bongo hasn't denied that Smalto brought him prostitutes from Paris, saying it's a private matter. Bongo bought up to $600,000 worth of Smalto's fashions every year. Smalto testified that Bongo paid the women $2,000 to $8,000, plus travel expenses. The Italian-born designer said he didn't know for a fact that the women had to sleep with Bongo. Unlike pandering, prostitution isn't a crime in France. 'ER' actress only plays a nurse LOS ANGELES — Julianna Margulies isn't a nurse, but she plays one on "ER." Some people just don't seem to understand that. "I was at the gym the other day, and I was on the Stall-master, and a girl fainted a couple of machines over, and everyone looked at me," Margulies said in an "Entertainment Tonight" interview for broadcast today. "I was like, 'What do you want me to do about it? I can't do anything. I just play one on TV.' " Margulies plays nurse Carol Hathaway on the NBC show. Sagan gets sister's bone marrow SEATTLE — Astronomer Carl Sagan is recovering well from a bone-marrow transplant he received from his sister to combat a disease that can develop into leukemia if left untreated. Sagan is making "remarkable progress" and was released to an outpatient program in the last few days, officials at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center said Monday. The center identified his illness as myelodysplasia, a form of anemia in which the bone marrow doesn't produce enough red blood cells. It is Sqgan also known as pre-leukemia syndrome, and is nearly always fatal if left untreated, the center said. Sagan, 60, received the transplant April 7 from his sister, Cari Greene, who was a perfect match. It usually takes six to nine months for the patient's immune system to become fully normal.
