Unesmen-Vaughan Rody, RayScapinello. fiiTrpTrrriT7 Kirk Daubenspeck allowed just four goals. Daubenspeck stopped all 28 Columbia shots in the deciding fourth game for a 3-0 victory Tuesday. "The way we built our team this summer, it's a tough, physical team that relies on good team defense and good goaltending," Columbia coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "We're a blue-collar team." South Carolina put only 99 shots on goal in its four games against Columbia, nearly a 25 per-game average, and scored 11 goals, while allowing the Inferno just 119 shots and eight goals.

By contrast, Florida fired 185 shots on goal in four games against Roanoke, a 46 per-game average and scored 16 goals, while allowing 149 shots and 13 goals. The Stingrays' approach has worked so far this season against Florida. South Carolina won four of the teams' six regular-season meetings this season, including going a perfect 3-0 at TECO Arena. Of course, Florida's roster has changed since the two teams last met Feb. 8.

The Blades have added players like forwards Tom Buckley (out of retirement), Reggie Berg (off injured reserve), John McNabb (trade) and Damian Surma (reassigned from the Lowell Lock Monsters) and defensemen Brindley, Tim O'Connell and Mike Torney in trades since. "This Florida series is way harder than the Columbia Fitzsimmons said. "They're more talented. They have a bloody all-star team. I know our guys are excited.

Both teams have made changes and are better hockey teams, and that's why they're in the second round of the playoffs." One thing that hasn't changed is the rivalry that has built up this season. The hostility between the two teams boiled over Jan. 31 at TECO Arena when the teams combined for 22 penalties, including six fighting majors, and 62 penalty minutes in the first period. "There's going to be one way to describe the series and -that's going to be intense," Florida coach Gerry Fleming said. "These two teams play hard against each other.

It's the closest thing we have to a rivalry. The games are always heated, and I expect the same in this series." Fitzsimmons, who is a long-time friend of Fleming, concurs. "Until we played Columbia I would have said Florida is our biggest rival in the divisioa I think the groundwork was set the last time we played in this building." NOTES: Buckley (6 goals, 9 points) is the ECHL's playoff leader in goals and points. Florida Jeff Maund, who has been hampered by an upper body injury, practiced this week, but Fleming would not say whether he or Rob Zepp would start in goal. Saturday night's game will be broadcast locally on WEVU and simulcast in Charleston, S.C.

PUTLER ALDENPINES COUNTRY CLUB OPEN TO THE PUBLIC MEMBERSHIPS AVAILABLE NEW DELI WITH FANTASTIC SANDWICHES STILL THE COLDEST DRINKS AROUND! Canadiens prevent Bruins from clinching The Associated Press DETROIT The Detroit Red Wings suddenly figured out a way to create enough space to let their skill shine. Pavel Datsyuk's dazzling passes set up two goals before seven minutes elapsed and the Red Wings went on to beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 Thursday night to take a 3-2 series lead. The home team has won each game in the first-round, best-of-seven series and the Predators hope to keep up the trend in Game 6 on Saturday in Nashville. Henrik Zetterberg, Brett Hull and Brendan Shanahan scored in the first period for the Red Wings, who are determined to avoid a second straight first-round flop following another successful regular season. After Nicklas Lidstrom's power-play goal midway through the second period gave Detroit a 4-0 lead, Nashville's Sergei Zholtok scored on the power play with 37.2 seconds left in the period.

Detroit's Curtis Joseph made 19 saves in his first playoff start since the Red Wings were swept by Anaheim in the first round last season. Joseph, who has been hobbled with an ankle injury for much of the season, replaced Manny Legace. Tomas Vokoun made 27 saves. Vokoun stopped 82 of 83 shots in Games 3 and 4 as Nashville evened the series with two wins at home. The Predators went nearly 78 minutes without giving up a goal before Detroit's first-period flurry.

The Red Wings scored on their first, fourth and ninth shots. They did not score in the first period in the first four games. CANADIENS 5, BRUINS 1 BOSTON Saku Koivu had a goal and two assists, and Jose Theodore made 43 saves, helping the Canadiens stay alive in the playoffs. The Canadiens trail the best-of-seven series 3-2 and will host Game 6 on Saturday night. Montreal scored two power-play goals, but the Bruins continued to struggle with the man advantage.

Boston was 0-for-4 Thursday and is 2-for-22 in the series. SHARKS 3, BLUES 1 SAN JOSE, CALIF. Injury replacement Mark Smith scored his first NHL playoff goal, and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 21 shots in the Sharks' series-clinching victory. Mike Ricci got an insurance goal with 338 left, and Brad Stuart also scored as the second-seeded Sharks took the series 4-1, winning three games at the sold-out Shark Tank. They're the first team to advance to the conference semifinals, which probably won't begin for a week.

A year after finishing 14th in the Western Conference, the Sharks capped their franchise-record 104-point regular season with their fifth trip to the second round. They've never reached the conference finals. Brian Savage scored for the Blues, who have just two goals in their last four games in San Jose.
