David Ansen, News Week At last, the free-spirited, full-hearted gesture that everyone has been waiting for movies to make all decade long. 7- 7r 4 rM ft From page 1D "That's what they say when people call the station," Wheeler has toM his viewers.

He insists that one the primary reasons for the cancellation is "I'm making too much money." How much is too much1 Wheeler says his show has grossed as much as $170,000 a year. He has been buying the hour of air time for $200 per night. The most recent Arbitron ratings for the midnight to 1 a.m. time period show Wheeler being watched in about 1000 households, while national talk show hosts Johnny Carson and David Letterman average 12.000 and 4000 viewers, respectively. Wheeler says he has never ried about the size of his audience.

"If my advertisers get results," he says, "my audience is large enough. His present worry is where he will go next. He mentions WFTX-TV. the new Cape Coral station, as being a possible location for his next show, but adds, "I'm in love with radio more than I am television. I'd be glad to do a drive-time radio show." If you have ever wondered hat a live radio talk show looks like.

Wheeler has been showing viewers for years. The host occasionally brings out guests, but spends most of his shows working the phones, talking alternately into a camera or toward the speaker phone. He regular-ly punches at the phone, disconnecting long-winded callers, shuddering in their wake, and then taking the next line. Some callers compliment him. Others, those most likely to be punched out in mid-sentence, oppose Wheeler's strong opinions.

His guests have typically ranged from musicians of dubious distinction to delegates from asvuted well-meaning societies. A viewer in search of David Letterman's nightly ridicule of earnesiness might easily confuse some of Wheeler's serious guests ith Letterman's satires. Wheeler's final show on LV tonight originally scheduled to be a holiday-season telethon to benefit struggling Fort Myers Beach restau-ranteur Richard Birchard in his battle with bureaucracy will instead be a repeat episode. Wheeler says that WEVU asked him not to do a live show for tonight's finale. How ironic: The masterof cutting callers short is getting a similarly abrupt send-off by WEVU.

But while Wheeler's phone adversaries could always call in again at a later time on another issue, there will be no returning for the sometimes-controversial, sometimes-comical host when the final credits roll tonight BROWN'S 5 p.m. 7 days 6225 Estero Boulevard Fort Myers Beach, Florida (813)463-6660 Li Ftoyd Theatres LIT 7:30 WIIRO SCIINCI 10:50 0:10 GOTCH 7:30 SUM THING 10:33 9:10 MAUD tODHS AIUIT 2.00 7:30 COMMANDO 10:45 3.00 Pit 9:10 TURK 111 CM NORTHSIDE SWAP SHOP SUN. 7 A.M.
