The Orioles on Tuesday traded the right-handed outfielder to the Texas Rangers for right-handed pitcher John Dettmer. Dettmer, 25, who was pitching in relief at Class AAA Oklahoma City, will report to the Orioles' Class AAA Rochester affiliate in the International League. Dettmer opened the season with the Rangers and appeared in one game, a relief outing on opening day. In 12 lifetime major league contests, including nine starts, Dettmer has an 0-6 record with a 4.47 ERA. Basketball • At New York , the NBA expansion draft to stock the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies will be held on June 24. The league announced Tuesday that existing teams will be able to protect eight players apiece. None of the teams will lose more than one player. The expansion clubs, entering the league for $125 million each, became official members on Tuesday. That designation makes them eligible to sign free agents who did not complete the season on any rosters. Cycling • At Loreto, Italy, Tony Rominger won the fourth stage of the Tour of Italy on Tuesday and strengthened his overall lead in the cycling race. It was the second stage victory in three days for the 34-year-old Swiss cyclist, who also won Sunday's race against-the-clock in Assisi. Football • At Davie, Fla., Louis Oliver, once a top- round Miami Dolphins draft pick, signed with the team Tuesday as a free agent. The 29-year- old safety agreed to a two-year contract with the Dolphins after a short stint at Cincinnati.Oliver will get $1 million cash and up to another $1 million in incentives for starting and Super Bowl play, said agent Drew Rosenhaus. Oliver played five seasons for coach Don Shula after Miami selected him in the 1989 draft. But two years ago, he held out through training camp before unhappily agreeing to a one-year contract. "If they don't want us there, we won't force it," said Ah' Osman Ali, secretary general of the Somali Olympic Committee. The board of directors of the northeast Georgia county's chamber of commerce last week postponed a vote on a contract to host the Somali track team before the 1996 Games. Some county residents had objected because of the way Somalis treated U.S. soldiers in 1993, when troops were in the African nation to help deliver food and keep peace. They cited pictures of a Somali mob dragging an American soldier's body through the streets of Mogadishu. Tennis • At Rome, Pete Sampras, the top seed and defending champion, was knocked out of the Italian Open Tuesday, losing in straight sets to unseeded Fabrice Santoro of France. Santoro broke a listless Sampras in the first game of the match en route to a 6-3, 6-4 upset on the clay courts at the Foro Italico. Sampras also lost to Santoro in the first round of the 1992 Italian Open. "I dug myself a really big hole and I couldn't get out of it," Sampras said. • At Berlin, Martina Hingis, the 14-year-old Swiss sensation, rolled into the second round of the German Open on Tuesday by routing Spanish qualifier Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-4, 6-0. Sanchez Lorenzo replaced American Shaun Stafford, who dropped because of an injury.
