an columns battling toward Kiev from the northwest and southwest are meeting fierce resistance from the red army and are suffering very heavily from guerilla fighters behind the lines who have been told to kill them "like mad dogs," it was reported. Marshal Semyon Budenny, commander of the soviet Ukrainian army, ordered a ruthless destruction of everything that might help the Germans and commanded men and women behind the lines to see that "not one ounce" of bread from the rich grain fields reaches the invaders. A communique issued early today, covering Tuesday's action, said the German and Russian armies are locked in great struggles near Kor- osten, 90 miles northwest of Kiev, and Belaya Tserkov, 45 miles southwest of the Ukrainian capital. Fighting also continues near Smolensk, it reported. Pinccr Stalled.

The Germans are attempting to close the jaws of a gigantic pincer around Kiev, but apparently their drive has made little headway in the past two days. Russian planes were reported supporting the land resistance by a series of hard blows at German troop concentrations. On the Leningrad front, it was believed the latest German thrust, into the marshlands around Kholm, 110 miles west of the key Leningrad-Moscow railroad, was becoming less intense. The last two soviet communiques have omitted all references to fighting there. For the second successive clay, the high command failed to mention Novorzhev.

60 miles west of Kohlm. a possible indication that: soviet forces have been forced to fall back from there to Kohlm. Budenny, commander of the Ukrainian army, proclaimed to his warders and civilians: Nothing for Nazis. "Not one ounce of bread for the enemy. Harvest exactly as much as you need for the future.

Destroy the remainder. Destroy technical cultures, beets, rubber, flax. "Those of you capable to bear arms, join partisan units, organize new detachments, smash the hated German troops, destroy the fascists like mad dogs. Overturn trains, undermine communications, blow up dumps." "The hour of victory is approaching. All forces to the struggle against the enemy." RUSSELL COFTMAN ME- TURNS FROM HOSPITAL Mr.

78-year-old plantation owner in this rich cotton section. The move was an experiment at first, a desperate plan to do something about weeds that ordinary hoeing didn't dent. Now Kinsolv- lng swears by the process. Back in 1909 Kinsolving took over some land in Dunklin county and found that 2,000 acres of cotton were infested with Johnson grass. In spite of eradication efforts by tenants year after year, the Johnson grass thrived almost as well as the cotton.

Finally Kinsolving took over cultivation of acreage himself. He fenced eaoh of the cotton fields I and as an turned Rose some geese into the long cotton n-ws in one field. That flock made licit of the led to the process that forced Kinsolving to acquire upwards of 2,000 geese. The poultry seemed to work best in areas that were well watered and where the grass grew heaviest. So each year more pumps were added or moved until the seese killed the grass.

Now the geese are so well trained that they take their places among the rows of cotton, eat and march from one end of the field to the other. In his careful way, Kinsolving. who farms 2948 acres, worked out a feeding system to keep the geese strong but keep them hungry enough to dive into the grass ravenously. A warning issued by the State H( alth Department follows: Every year Missouri has many I deaths due to typhoid fever, infant diarrhea and enteritis. These are filth diseases, and the causes can be traced to lilthy open privies which contaminate shallow, nearby wells and which are accessible to flies and other vermin. Such conditions in this state are a disgrace and should not be tolerated. Read what the U. S.

Public Health Service says in its Bulletin No. 108: Certain diseases, as typhoid fever and the dysenteries, are transmitted by the body excretions of suffering from the disease and by carriers. The infectious agent is the living germ of the disease. I "A carrier is an apparently heal- I thy person whose excreta contains the living germs of the disease. He may be a person who has never been known to have suffered from it.

Other persons can become injected only by taking the live germ the disease into the body through the mouth, usually in contaminated water, milk, or other food. Thus, repulsive as the thought may be, anyone who contracts typhoid fever or dysentery actually has taken into his mouth a minute quantity of the body excretions of another person. "Since typhoid fever and the dysenteries are transmitted by Infected excreta, all of these diseases could be practically eradicated if all human excreta of diseased pcr- jsons could not be taken into the mouth by other persons." LEONARD WOOD AJUtA POPULATION SOON WILL HOLD THIRD RANKING St. Louis, Aug. Port Leonard Wood area will bo the third largest population center in the state when tho full complement of 40,000 soldiers are In camp there, John P.

Ouycr, community service organizer of the federal service agency, said yesterday. "It's army statistics, not mine." he added. "They say that there, will be about 1.3 civilians move to the community for every soldier. Roughly that will mean the moving in of around 60,000 civilians for ,40,000 soldiers." And that would put tho fort and the surrounding territory population above the 100,000 mark, counting those who already live in that region. Only St.

Louis and Kansas City can surpass that population figure in Missouri. Batteries for an can. Battery recharged. 25o. Greene's AutTsup.
