Springvrall Orthopedic Deluxe By Jerry Graham Staff Writer Owners of rural land may be entitled to tax relief if the land is used for agricultural or timber production, a tax official said. Marvin Hahn, chief appraiser of the Gregg Appraisal District, said owners have until May 1 to apply for "ag-use" or- "open space" appraisals, either of which would reduce the appraised value for property tax purposes. He said most apply for the open space appraisal, which applies to land used for agriculture, timber growth or as an ecological laboratory. To qualify, the owner must have used the land for a qualifying use for. five years, but agriculture is not required to be the owner's primary business.

To qualify for the ag-use appraisal, the owner's principal business must be agriculture, and the land must have had an agricultural use for the preceding three years, Hahn said. The owner must also apply for the ag-use appraisal every year, he said. Hahn said owners face penalties if they obtain the special appraisals and then remove the qualified land from agricultural or timber production. If the owner of ag-use land either sells the property or changes the use of the land, a rollback tax is assessed to require the owner to pay the taxes he would have otherwise paid for the previous three years. Those who obtain the open space appraisal face a five-year tax rollback if they change the use of land to a nonqualifying use.

Application forms for both types of appraisal are available at the district's office, 1333 E. Harrison Road in Longview. If landowners owners have questions, they can call the staff at 238-8823. iarr. warrarnyi Twin EaPc.
