Variety's Todd McCarthy called it "a strange, minor-key attempt to make an old-fashioned. Cold War-style American thriller in the new Russia." Bo Derek's latest picture, "Woman of Desire," is headed for tape Wednesday, when Vidmark is releasing two versions: R-rated and unrated. Robert Mitchum plays a retired lawyer, Jeff Fahey is a young yachtsman accused of murder, and Steven Bauer plays the twin brother of Derek's missing boyfriend. A twisted French-language romantic comedy starring Guilaine Londez as a young woman who has affairs with two cab drivers who have different shifts, it's one of the Belgian filmmaker's more accessible movies. At the same time, Fox Lorber is releasing writer-director-producer Nanni Moretti's Italian satire, "Palombella Rossa" (Red Wood Pigeon), in which Moretti also plays the leading role: an amnesiac Communist water-polo player named Michele. The New York Times' Vincent Canby called it "a brilliantly sunny look that accents Michele's confusions." ByJOHNHARTL Seattle Times Robert James Waller's novel, "The Bridges of Madison County," has yet to be filmed, but a traveloguish videotape called "The Magic of Madison County" will be released by MPI Home Video next week. Described as capturing "the beauty of rustic covered bridges, quiet rivers and luscious green hills in the quaint countryside which is the setting of the best-selling book," the 40-minute tape features music by Danny Wright and the poetry of Shakespeare, Browning and Kahlil Gibran, read by John Rhys-Davies. The 40-minute cassette is priced at $15.

Also bypassing most theaters for the video market is "The Seventh Coin," a Peter O'Toole vehicle that had a brief run in New York and Los Angeles. Variety critic Joe Leydon dubbed it "Nancy Drew Goes to Jerusalem," noting that "minus a few secondsof graphic violence, (it) would be well-suited for The Disney Channel." The L.A. Weekly's critic, Hazel-Dawn Dumpert, was less accepting. She wrote that "It's sad to see a talented and beloved actor mired in the goo of truly awful filmmaking." O'Toole playsa homicidal military man who chases two kids through Jerusalem while trying to find a valuable ancient coin. "The Ice Runner," which also at 10091 McGregor Blvd.
