He was there as a player an outfielder. "When I got there, it took awhile to sink in that I was there with Jim Rice and Wade Boggs. The feeling is hard to explain," Greenwell recalled.

"I always had looked up to these guys and here I was playing catch with them. But I learned they're Just regular guys. They walk on two legs just like everyone else. "Wade Boggs and Mike Easier were really nice. They helped me with my hitting and gave me advice on how to handle the pressure," he said.

The former North Fort Myers High School standout must have made a good impression. Thursday he got the news every Triple-A baseball player hopes to hear the Red Sox had called him up to the major leagues. He finishes the season with Pawtucket Tuesday and then will join the parent team when the Red Sox return from a road trip. Greenwell, 22, was drafted out of high school as the Red Sox sixth pick (third round) in the 1982 June draft. He started with Elmira of the Class A New York-Penn League and batted .269.

The following season he went to Winston-Salem of the Carolina League and improved to .278, but a knee injury limited him to 48 games. Because he got limited playing time, he returned to Winston-Salem the followingyear and hit .306. This season he bypassed the next step in the normal progression the Red Sox Double-A affiliate in New Britian of the Eastern League. He also made a switch from third base to the outfield. This season nothing but good things have happened with Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League.

Through Friday's games, he's hitting .251 in 113 games with a team-leading SO RBIs, five of them game-winning hits. His 12 home runs are second on the team to Pat Dodson, and his 102 hits are second to Gary Miller-Jones. He was one of two Pawtucket players named to the International League All-Star team. hour bus rides, and, to top things off, a position change. Signed as an outfielder, he was told immediately his future was in catching. Then, in the fifth game of the season, he pulled a hamstring and was out for the next 16 games. "I did a little catching in high school, but not much. I had a lot to learn about it.

It makes hitting a lot tougher, too. The biggest adjustment was getting used to playing every day. In high school you only have three games a week," he said. David's first professional season came to a close Thursday night. Medicine Hat finished the short rookie season 26-44, third in the Northern division of the Pioneer League.

In 50 games, David batted .235 with 36 hits in 153 at-bats. He hit with seven doubles, two triples, four home runs and had 22 RBIs. f- "Things didn't click in the beginning. I just wasn't patient You can be hot one week and cold the next. It's hard to deal with, but you just have to learn to live with it That's the way it is in baseball," David said.

Making matters worse was a back problem that flared up toward the end of the season. David will go to Toronto and be examined by team doctors. Then it's on to Dune-din for the Instructional League. "I need to work on defensive catching," he said. "When I get more experience, things like throwing to the bases will come more naturally and the hope is my hitting will pick up." $15Q.

Triple-A to the majors isn't a lot different because there are so many guys at that lelvel who have played In the big leagues. Making this kind of jump (to Triple-A) can hurt some people, but it worked out for me. I've learned more here than I could ever have learned in Double-A," Greenwell said.

Todd Fischer The Midland Angels never got it going this season, but Fischer did. The Angels finished with a losing record, far in back of El Paso in the Western division of the Double-A Texas League. The 5-foot-10 right-hander even saved a double-header, but he couldn't save the season. Three weeks ago Fischer came on in relief in the first game of a twtnbill against the San Antonio Dodgers and earned a save. But that wasn't the end of his night's work.

He earned a save in the second game as well. The next day he repeated the feat to total four saves In two days. "They say it's a record that probably never will be broken. It was a real thrill, definitely the highlight of the season." Fischer began in the Oakland A's organization, signing as a free agent after spending two years at Edison Community College. Since signing, he has been to some obscure places, starting with the A's Pioneer League team in Idaho Falls in 1982.

There he recorded an 8-2 record with an impressive 1.12 ERA in 56 V3 innings. The next year it was Madison, of the Midwest League, where he was 13-9 with a 2.28 ERA. Last season he dropped off to 2-9 at Albany of the Double-A Eastern League. The 24-year-old relief pitcher was not happy with the A's, voiced some disapproval and spent six weeks playing baseball in Mexico last spring. Upon his return he learned the California Angels had bought his contract.

This season was a welcomed relief. "I had a couple good years with them (A's), but at the end of spring training they said it was a numbers game and they had to give some of their high draft picks a chance. They wanted to send me back to Modesto (Class A) and I told them I didn't want to go. I figured I'd take a chance and it worked out. Things are going better for me And after four years in the minors, he has learned to cope with the bus trips.

"I bought two foam rubber pads and I stick them between two seats. After we eat I crash and hope I don't wake up until we're home." Although he was in the starting rotation at ECC, he prefers the bullpen. "I like relieving better than starting," he said. "I like having the opportunity to get in the game almost every day." Call 489-1900 after 6 By MIKE GILL News-Press Boating Writer FORT MYERS BEACH Summerset Regatta officials postponed the 20th annual Labor Day offshore sailing races Saturday morning and refused to send 79 yachts and over 300 Southwest Florida sailors Into the Gulf of Mexico to participate In the two-day sailboat regatta because of the threat of Hurricane Elena. The Summerset Regatta, a two-race series from Fort Myers Beach to Naples and Naples to Marco Island and return to Naples, is one of the largest and most prestigious sailing wents in Southwest Florida. The Regatta has been rescheduled for next weekend, September 7-8, according to Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society (CMCS) Rear Commodore Liz Lombardo. Lombardb, Bob Duff and Mike Stratton, flag officers with the CMCS, elected not to take the risk of sending the fleet of 79 sailboats into the Gulf of Mexico due to adverse weathercondltions.

"We made the decision to reschedule the regatta during the early hours Saturday morning," said a weary Liz Lombardo. "It was a long sleepless night. When the gale warnings went up we agreed that the gamble to send the fleet out was not worth the risk." Lombardo said that most of the yachtsmen entered in the 20th annual Labor Day Regatta could handle the adverse weather conditions at sea but the event would have been to risky and not much fun. Yachts were scheduled to race the 23-mile distance from Fort Myers Beach to Naples Saturday. Today the fleet was to race from Naples to Marco Island and return to Naples, a 1 5-mile course.

"Most of the big boats could handle the conditions with little concern but we would have sent out a lot of little boats too. When you sail from Fort Myers Beach to Naples, there is no place to duck in if things get bad offshore. You are stuck out there and we did not want to take the risk." The Summerset Regatta has been postponed twice in the past due to threatening weather. In 1977, angry dark clouds rolled in from the Gulf of Mexico when a tropical depression spawned off Fort Myers Beach the day before the start of the regatta. Two years later, CMCS officials postponed the regatta when a hurricane rumbled up from the Carribean.

Despite sunny skies and perfect sailing conditions that year, regatta officials were concerned that the hurricane could trap the fleet off Collier County. "We will hold the regatta next weekend according to the same plan that we had for this weekend," Lombardo said. "All the times and everything will remain the same, just one week later." Lombardo and regatta officials hope the additional week will allow more sailors to sign up for the event. Additional Summerset Regatta information may be obtained by phoning Liz Lombardo at 472-4422.
