1 THg TIMES FOOTBALL 4B SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5. 1992 prep football To mado's1st-'ha ells lumberjacks the Rayville offense to just 32 total yards. Jerald Chatman had a 52 yard fumble recovery for Rayville. mm iV it 4- yS ji I i -1 Defending Class 2A state champion Haynesville jumped to a 170 lead then held on for a 17-12 win over arch-rival Haynesville in the traditional season-opening game. Springhill reached the Haynesville 26 in the final two minutes but ran out of downs.

The Tornado, the defending Class 2A state champions, twice scored on fourth-down touchdown passes in the first half to take the lead. But Springhill rallied late in the half when Roan hit Flanigan on fourth down for Springhill's first score to make it 17-6 at half. Midway through third quarter, Patrick Easter had an 80-yard TD run called back on a clipping penalty and one play later Haynesville fumbled. Four plays later on fourth from 13, Roan hits Flanigan with 3:09 left in third quarter. Going into the fourth quarter, Springhill marched from its own 43 to the Haynesville 26 with 3:07 left.

But a fourth-down pass fell incomplete and Haynesville took over with 1:33 left to run out the clock. Mansfield 33, No. DeSoto 0 Wmm I x. I-. Times pholoJIM HU0EUSON Airline quarterback Eric David signals the Vikings' coaching staff the distance from a first down Friday night.

Hall, who passed for 115 yards while completing 4 of 12 passes, scored on runs of 2 and 1 yards. He passed 55 yards to Keith Haynes in the opening period to open the scoring and found Kyle Haynes with a 30-yard pass in the second period. The visiting Tigers scored in the first period on a 7-yard run by Chris Snoden. Evangel 41, IM'wood (Lena) 0 It was not the way Dennis Dunn wanted to win his first game as head football coach at Evangel Christian Academy.

Dunn's Eagles defeated Northwood (Lena) 41-0 in a game that was called at the half. The reason: Northwood brought only 12 players and had only six healthy to begin the second half. Northwood is currently under severe Louisiana High School Athletic Association penalties that resulted from an ineligible players scandal last winter. Under the sanctions, the school is prohibited from competing in district and 6tate championship honors this season. Dunn 6aid that Northwood officials told him as many as 15 players quit the squad earlier this week.

"You hate to open up like that," Dunn said. "It was a sad situation for them. They don't need to be playing at all. But the LHSAA indicated if they didn't play this year they would be eliminated from competition for two years, go they got to line up. Dunn said Northwood assistant coach Sidney Thornton asked him before the game not to run the ball and he complied.

Thornton acted as game coach because one of the LHSAA sanctions is that head coach Tom O'Kelly is barred from field coaching. "(Thornton) asked us' before the game, please don't run the football because it will hurt my kids up front," Dunn said. Evangel quarterback Josh Booty threw 11 times in the first half, completing nine for five touchdowns. All-area tailback Troy Brown didn't suit up for the Wolverines' opener in Mansfield because of a knee injury, but he wasn't missed. Second-string tailback Derrick Jack son and third-teamer Pancho Lewis each scored two touchdowns as defending state Class AAA champion Mansfield won its 12th straight game over two seasons.

Jackson, a junior, scored on a run of 21 yards and caught a 22-yard pass from quarterback Melvin Hill, both in the second period, as the Wolverines ran up a 20-0 halftime lead. Hill went 5 yards for a first period score after all-state defensive back Darrell Lane recovered a Griffin fumble at the DeSoto 23. Lewis went 2 yards in the third period and got his second score on a 19-yard pass from backup quarterback Chad Deas in the final period. Jerry Goza kicked the three Mansfield PATs. kind of night it would be," Bullard said.

"We were ready for this. We got excited for this game. The line opened the holes and the rest was easy." What wasn't easy was trying to come off the field after taking a hit as he tried to recover at loose ball. He made it across the field under his own power barely after weaving in both directions. "I got knocked out when I first got hit," Bullard said.

"Then I got nauseated. It took a long time before I knew what was going on." "Hell do some exciting things for us," Howell said. "It's fun to watch him play. Nine or 10 more weeks of this would be nice." McHalffey is hoping for no more weeks of the performance his team gave the worst opening game loss since 1972 (a 34-0 loss to Airline). "Against a team as good as Airline, you have to execute and we didn't do that," he said.

"You can't make the mistakes we did (three fumbles, two interceptions and a dropped punt) and expect to win. But it's over and it's time to move on. It doesn't do any good to look back." Lights out: But all is bright for Vikings, who roll 35-6. By JOHN JAMES The Times About the only thing that went right for the Bossier Bearkats was that lights on the scoreboard at Memorial Stadium didn't work. Which meant that a 35-6 loss to Airline Friday wasn't there for all the world to' see.

"But I think it was pretty obvious anyway," Bossier coach Billy Don McHalffey said. About the only thing that went wrong for Airline's Hunter Bullard was that his lights went out late in the third quarter after he took a hit while on the ground. Which meant that he wasn't able to add to his already impressive totals (143 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns) against the Bearkats. "What really hurt," Bullard said, "was not being able to get back in there." Bullard (14 points), Jeff Maddox (18 points) and the rest of the Vikings were busy lighting up the scoreboard even if it didn't work ona night when Airline took control of the game early and never let go. Asked which was more impressive, the performance of his offense or his defense, Airline coach Bob Howell paused before saying "That's a coin toss." If it's heads, the choice is the Vikings' offense, which rolled up 330 yards in total offense and had Only two of its 42 running plays failing to pick up yardage.

If it's tails, the choice is defense, which allowed only 82 yards until Bossier's final drive of the game, didn't allow the Bearkats across midfield until late in the second quarter and scored a touchdown (Maddox had a 30' yard interception return). "I think desire is the key word for tonight," Howell said. "We had some kids who didn't play well during the preseason show what they could do tonight." It didn't take Bullard long to prove what he could do. He scored on a 43-yard run on the fourth Viking play of the game and added a one-yard scoring run in the second quarter. One advantage for O'Donnell was his ability to pick up new offensive systems.

It started in his high school days in Madison, N.J., when he played for four head coaches in four years. He studied under four different offensive coordinators at Maryland. And he is working with his second Steelers head coach and second offensive coordinator "I feel very comfortable running this offense," he said. "There's no doubt in my mind. I know when the ball is supposed to go when I get my reads.

O'Donnell came to Pittsburgh as a third-round draft choice in 1990, the fifth quarterback taken overall. A training Camp holdout that lasted seven weeks gave him no chance to play as a rookie. That chance came last season when Brister suffered a sprained knee against the Giants the team O'Donnell rooted for as a child growing up 30 minutes from Manhattan. He led the Steelers to 20 second-half points against the defending Super Bowl champions, only to lose on a last-second field goal. Pittsburgh managed only a 2-6 record in his eight starts, finishing 7-9 overall.

He finished the season with 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions for a 78.8 quarterback rating, compared to 72.9 for Brister. "It was definitely a learning experience," O'Donnell said. "I don't think they drafted me in the third round to sit around for long." The quarterback contest apparently did not divide the two quarterbacks. Both say they intend to remain friends. "When Neil came up, I took him under my wing, Brister said.

"He stayed at my house. If you're worried about somebody taking your job in this business, it will cause you to make errors. Eventually, we're all going to get cut or be done playing." Now that the job is his, O'Donnell feels the competition is only starting, I "Now I have to go out and win some football games," he said. "If I don't, people will start pointing fingers. I have to get things going at the beginning.

I can't wait until the second half anymore." NFL HELPS ANDREW VICTIMS NFL Charities is donating $500,000 worth of NFL-licensed merchandise to victims of Hurricane Andrew in Miami and New Orleans, the NFL announced Friday. "The NFL clubs are trying in their small way to provide some help to the victims of this tragedy, especially the young people," NFL commissioner Paul Taglia-bue said. "We will continue to explore ways that we can help." Dolphins players will distrib ute a portion of the merchandise Sunday in Homestead, at a tent city that has been erected at Harris Field. Another shipment of merchandise will arrive at the Superdome in New Orleans by the middle of next week. The Saints are developing a plan for distribution.

Miami's scheduled opener against New England at Joe Robbie Stadium on Sunday has been postponed until Oct. 18 because of the hurricane, i From Wire Reports HOUSTON Competition brought out the best in Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Neil O'Donnell. He won the chance to start in Sunday's AFC Central Division opener against the Houston Oii-ers after a four-week preseason duel with veteran Bubby Brister, the former Northeast Louisiana University quarterback who was Pittsburgh's starter since 1988. "I don't care what kind of job it is, you have to go out and perform to win the job," he said. "I'm happy to be in that position right now, I think competition only brings out the best in everyone." After setting the stage with comebacks against the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears, he made his move in the fir6t half of last Saturday's 24-3 preseason victory over the New York Giants.

He completed 1 1 of 15 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Steelers coach Bill Cowher afterward gave O'Donnell the nod. "I felt like I deserved it," the former Maryland quarterback said. "I worked hard, and it all came into place." He stood in the pocket for seven quarters during the preseason and completed 57 percent of his passes for 498 yards, seven, touchdowns and no interceptions for a huge 128.0 quarterback rating. Cowher said there would be no hesitation switching to Brister if the attack stalls.

"Neil has a lot of poise sitting back, but I feel very confident we have two quarterbacks who have been efficient running our offense," he said. "One guy just put some numbers up, and he's been consistent throughout. Irom Jay Braketield (kick tatledl Acadiana 19, LaGrange 9 Airline 35.
