B4 Tuesday, May 16, 1995 The Salina Journal in the Salina Business Community Salina CRNAs Offer "No Pain" Remedies Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) are anesthesia specialists who administer more than half of the 26 million anesthetics given to patients in the United States each year. Nurses were the first professional group to provide anesthesia services in the United States. Established in the late 1800s as the first clinical nursing specialty, nurse anesthesia developed in response to the growing need surgeons had for specially trained anesthetists. In Salina, eleven CRNAs practice at both Asbury-Salina Regional Medical Center and St. John's Regional Health Center. These CRNAs administer anesthesia for all types of surgical cases, and practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered. Three of these professionals have been practicing in Salina longer than any other anesthesia providers-Marilyn Smalley, Johnna Leach, and Hugh Hyberger. Most of the eleven have been involved in Kansas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and have been involved in both legislature and health care reform. From left (counterclockwise): Steve Preston, Dani Cossette, Susie Marietta, Marilyn Smalley, Jo Ann Stoskopf, Elizabeth Harbin, Johnna Leach, Larry Ashley, Dick Prendergast. Not pictured: Hugh Hyberger and Judy Bottger. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), the practice of anesthesia has become safer in recent years due to improvements in medications and technology advances, such as patient monitoring techniques. The nature of anesthesia requires the constant vigilance of the anesthesia provider. Whether this provider is an anesthesiologist or a CRNA, studies show any anesthesia-related incident to be related more to not vigilantly monitoring the patient instead of lack of education. While an anesthesiologist spends a minimum of 12 years studying the medical profession, becoming a CRNA usually takes eight years (including two years of critical care nursing experience). CRNAs provide high quality, cost-effective anesthesia care. In 1990, the Department of Health and Human Services presented the results of a study of nurse anesthesia manpower needs conducted by the Health Economics Research, Inc. This study concluded that a more efficient use of CRNAs to deliver anesthesia could save the nation $1 billion annually by the year 2010.
