High School Football: Week 7 4C SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2005 THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com alance tack at Seeds EViiiCiii to win AS, in -t 1 1 Trill first touchdown late in the first half. The duo's initial score came from a slant to the left corner of the end zone with 50.7 seconds remaining. Woodlawn had several opportunities to put points on the board in the first half but Minden's defense stiffened up once the Knights entered its territory. The Knights took five first-half possessions into Minden's half of the field, but only collected six points. The final drive of the half saw Woodlawn stall at the Tide's 21 as time ran out.

Woodlawn's ineptitude showed early, after Minden running back Brandon Walker fumbled on the Crimson Tide's first play. The Knights drove all the way down to Minden's 2, but turned the ball over on downs. despite holding a 21-6 third-quarter lead. That's until Cupples and speedy receiver Demetric Carey pulled off their second big play of the evening. The 57-yard touchdown came via a crossing pattern and left little hope for the struggling Woodlawn squad.

"We've been practicing that all week," Cupples said. They were in Cover 1. They couldn't catch up with him he's the fastest guy on our team. All we had to do was just let him get across the middle." After scoring on its first possession of the game, Woodlawn was never able to find the right combination behind center, where Law tried three different players (Dennis Morris, Mario Johnson and Brandon Thomas). "We want to execute and I'm let people run over us.

That's not the way football is supposed to go. Until our team learns how to play with aggressiveness they're not going to win any football games." Woodlawn (3-4, 1-2) carried the ball into Crimson Tide territory seven times in the first three quarters and scored just seven points. Meanwhile the Crimson Tide offense was balanced and effective. Quarterback Derek Cupples threw for 163 yards a pair of touchdowns while Minden (4-3, 2-2) garnered 150 yards on the ground. "Once we got rollin' we felt like we could run the ball and throw it," Minden coach David Feaster said.

"That's a good feeling. I've been on the other end." Feaster was still a bit nervous trying to put the best player in there to execute," Law said. "As soon as we get one thing going, something else falls apart. We can never get it together." Morris began the game at quarterback and scored on a nifty 21-yard run early in the game, but he only completed two of six passes and threw an interception. Johnson and Thomas failed to throw a completion.

Morris' touchdown included a 360-degree move at Minden's 10 to avoid a group of tacklers. Minden's Trey Feaster capped a 10-play, 78-yard drive near the end of the first quarter with a quarterback sneak from the 1. The score helped give Minden a 7-6 lead with 17.7 seconds remaining. Nearly every time the Woodlawn Knights entered enemy turf Friday night, something bad happened. Minden's defense withstood several attacks by Woodlawn and the offense was efficient in a 28-6 District 1-4A victory. "We're not putting people on theground. We're not attacking," Woodlawn head coach Kendrick Law said. "Were not being aggressive we just lay down and Claiborne wins 8-A title By Whitney Harris Special to the Times The Claiborne Academy Rebels put themselves in the top spot in District 8-A of the MPSA with a 16-7 victory over the Glenbrook Apaches.

Shelby Wise scored on a 24-yard run to get the Rebels going. Claiborne improved to 7-1 overall and 5-3 in district. It was Claiborne's third district title in a row. HAYNESVILLE 56, COTTON VALLEY 8: Haynesville showed off against Cotton Valley at home on Friday, winning 56-8 to remain perfect in 2005. Golden Tors running back Cornell Evans was the only player scoring more than one touchdown, with two in the first quarter on runs of 37 and 12 yards.

Richard Jones ran for 91 yards to score the last touchdown in the fourth and finished with 162 yards. Dedarian Robinson and Josh Allen each kicked four successful extra points. Donald Parrish scored Cotton Valley's only touchdown and ran in the 2-point conversion. ST. MARY 43, BLOCK 32: The Tigers exploded in the second period on the way to staying unbeaten in District 3-LA, Rod Washington had 112 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in the game, while Lance LaCoste passed for two scores and ran for two.

He had Block was within 7-6 before St. Mary (6-1, 2-0) scored on two Washington runs and a 26-yard Antonio Castro field goal in the second period to take a 24-6 lead into the locker room. LAKESIDE 28, NORTH CAODO 14: The Warriors returned to their early season winning ways with a home victory in District l-2Aplay. Keon Taylor scored three of four touchdowns for Lakeside (5-1, 1-1). The Rebels got within a touchdown in the fourth quarter before Walker Haynes threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Mark Taylor to put it out of reach.

LOGANSPORT 46, ARCADIA 8: The Tigers outgained their opponent, 486-46, offensively to win easily in District 1-1A. Dominique Jenkins completed 10 of 15 passes for 215 yards. RUST0N 50, NATCHITOCHES CENTRAL 0: The Bearcats fought to stay in the hunt in a Thursday night road game. Ben Alsup threw four touchdown passes for Ruston, which is now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in District 1-5A play. 3 Loyola's Alexander Angli.n (3) is Friday night at Messmer Stadium. Jim HudelsonThe Times stopped by Homer's Jarasky Henderson (73) during first-quarter action Homer won 33-9 to keep the Flyers winless. "Homer is big up front, and they got after us on both sides of the line.

It's frustrating to lose like this, but give Homer credit. They're a good team." John LeBlanc, Loyola coach Pelicans' ground game too much for Flyers in District 1-2A victory. By Mark Barnard Special to The Times It's amazing that Loyola didn't leave Messmer Stadium on crutches after Friday night's District 1-2A matchup against Homer. The Flyers shot themselves in the foot several times. The Pelicans racked up 344 yards of offense all on the ground and the Homer defense held the Flyers to only four first downs while cruising to a convincing 33-9 victory.

The Flyers, now 0-6, are off to their worst start since the 1989 season. Termaine Benjamin's 218 yards rushing and three touchdowns paced Homer (6-1, 2-0), while Barry McGhee added 89 yards on 13 carries. And if it hadn't been for Loyola linebacker Tripp George, the Pelicans may have chalked up more yardage. "We saw some things on film that we wanted to try early, but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot," Loyola head coach John Le-Blanc said. "Homer is big up front, and they got after us on both sides of the line.

It's frustrating to lose like this, but give Homer credit. They're a good team." Despite an early offensive struggle, the Flyers managed to get on the scoreboard first thanks to Aubry Carmody's career-long 37-yard field goal. Loyola recovered a fumbled punt at the Homer 16 that set up Carmody's kick. Loyola's defense kept Homer grounded on its first three possessions, but the Pelicans began to establish the running game in the second quarter. Benjamin carried seven times for 63 yards that highlighted an 11-play, 87-yard Mansfield By Mike Schwalke Special to the Times MANSFIELD Mansfield's high-powered offense steered by the arm of Quan Howard and the legs of Jermaine Johnson were too much for the visiting Green Oaks squad in a 49-0 Wolverines victory here on Friday.

Though the Wolverines' offense was the focal point of the game, it was their defense that came through to stifle the Giants in the first half with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The Wolverines' defense added another pick in the fourth quarter. "We play like champions and we win like champions," Mansfield's Ishmael West said. some holes in along the way." The Flyers, who hadn't made a first down since Harrington's 10-yard run on the game's second play, finally found a spark late in the third quarter. Staring at third-and-20 from their 36, Marshall Johnston connected with Harrington on a 64-yard touchdown as Loyola pulled to within 13-9 with 3:05 showing in the third quarter.

But Homer answered on Casey's 23-yard touchdown run, and Benjamin added a pair of scoring runs from 14 and 8 yards in the fourth quarter that put the game away. of Mansfield's three-year starting quarterback Howard, the Wolverines have developed into a potent running offense as well, an improvement that Mayweather finds refreshing. "We've been running the ball a little bit more. That helps Qwan out. Other teams can't just key him," Mayweather said.

Johnson punctuated the first quarter with three rushing touch-dowus. The Wolverines were looking to grab another district win after last week's performance at Benton before heading on to a showdown at Booker T. Washington next week. The Giants, on the other hand, were seeking their first win of the season. Cupples Morris Feaster told his defense he wanted it to create more opportunities for his offense.

The kids listened. The Crimson Tide quickly converted on a Woodlawn mistake early in the second half after Knights punter Michael Armstrong fumbled the snap deep in his own territory. Running back Taurus Henix capped the short drive with a 5-yard score. Down 28-6, Woodlawn stumbled again in Minden territory when Johnson fumbled a handoff attempt early in the fourth quarter. N.

DeSoto no match for BTW a Jefferson continues outstanding season as Lions roll. By Brian Vernellis bvernellisgannett.com STONEWALL The showdown between the two most dynamic running backs in northwest Louisiana became a one-side affair. Booker T. Washington's Jeremy. Jefferson had 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns by halftime, helping the Lions handle North DeSoto, 38-8, on Friday.

The game featured Jefferson, the city's leading rusher who had more than 1,200 yards entering the game, and North Desoto's Jeremy Thomas, who's third in the area with more than 900 yards. It could have been a long night for the teams' defenses, but the Lions rose to the challenge containing Thomas with some success. North DeSoto had problems just catching up with Jefferson. He finished the game with 294 yards and four touchdowns. He could have had a fifth touchdown, but that was negated by a penalty.

Thomas finished with 84 yards and a touchdown. In the end, BTWs speed was too DOtent for the Griffins. Anytime Jefferson Jefferson cleared the end, he had a chance for the end zone. Another play that yielded results were swing passes from quarterback Jared Taylor to receivers like Trey Veals. The Lions utilized Veals' speed to create one-on-one situations and pick up big yards.

"They are jelling together and understanding that it doesn't take one person to be successful," BTW head coach Demise Loyd said of his players. "It takes a team. "They bought into the system and worked and dedicated themselves to the program." The Lions scored on its first drive a 25-yard pass from Taylor to Jeff-ery Smith. North DeSoto had an opportunity to answer quickly when Brandon Turner returned the Lions' kickoff 71 yards to the BTW 8-yard line. The Griffins couldn't capitalize though as the Lions' defense held steadfast.

hi fact, the defensive stand keyed a nine-play drive by BTW that culminated in Jefferson's first touchdown run, a 15-yard burst. Thomas rose to the challenge. His first touch of the night resulted in a 66-yard touchdown run and thrust the Griffins back into the game, trailing 16-8. "(North DeSoto) didn't quit," Loyd said. "We had them down but they still kept coming back and you have to commend their players and coaching staff."
