WORLD Friday, September 1996, Longview News-Journal 9A meetiiig with Mesimaiy Metenyahu, flefeiids peace TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) A day after finally meeting Yasser Arafat, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened Thursday to fire any Cabinet minister who can't accept his decision to talk peace with the Palestinians. Amid- shouts of "traitor!" and "resign!" from Likud Party activists stunned by especially Jewish settlers and religious nationalists, considered the meeting a betrayal of their dream of holding onto the West Bank and Gaza, where the Palestinians want to turn autonomy into a state. One group of settlers greeted Netanyahu at Thursday's convention with flyers bemoaning "100 days of disappointment" since his May election victory over Peres. Inside the convention halL tempers flared, with several scuffles and much shouting between supporters and opponents of the peace overture. "Bibi has betrayed us!" said Amram Cohavi, a veteran Likud memberreferring to Netanyahu by his nickname.

He was shouted down by another man, who said he was wounded in the 1973 war. "I have five fire him, saying: "I was not born in the: government" As opposition leader, Netanyahu bitterly criticized the late premier Yitzhak Rabin for making peace with Arafat His campaign ads featured footage of Arafat lead-: ing Peres who succeeded Rabin after his. assassination last year by the suggesting he was being manipulated. On Thursday, pictures of "The Handshake" between Netanyahu and Arafat were splashed across front pages. Netanyahu looked grim as he reached across a table reportedly positioned to prevent an embarrassing Arafat hug.

Rabin's widow has blamed Netanyahu' for encouraging her husband's assassin, and lashed out at the premier Thursday. the peace talks. "There is not, and will never be, a Palestinian state," Netanyahu told the clearly divided audience attending a Likud Party convention in Tel Aviv. Shaking Arafat's hand, he added, "wasn't easy." Some delegates applauded and others listened in stony silence. Wednesday's long-delayed summit with Arafat the first by a right-wing Israeli premier helped ease tensions with the Palestinians and was hailed by Netanyahu's predecessor, peace architect Shimon Peres.

And, despite Thursday's outcry, it appeared to enjoy the tacit support of a majority in the Likud and the Cabinet. But a vocal minority of Likud stalwarts, want them to enjoy peace and that's why Bibi had to meet Arafat," said the man. In an interview with Israel TV, Netanyahu said he would fire Cabinet ministers who oppose him: ''Ministers who do not sit comfortably with (the Arafat meeting) will not be in the government" Opposition was led by Cabinet ministers Ariel Sharon and Benny Begin, who received rousing cheers. 1 "For 20 years, U.S. presidents not let Arafat shake their hands or visit their capital," Sharon said, listing past terrorist incidents in which Arafat was involved.

"They knew some things mustn't be forgotten." Begin seemingly dared Netanyahu to Netanyahu Wednesday meeting and handshake with the Palestinian leader.
