'Orphaned' toddler in photo reunited with injured mother RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- A toddler thought to have been orphaned by mudslides unleashed on his mountain town by a Colombian volcano eruption has been reunited with his mother, the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board said today. A picture of the bandaged child reaching pleadingly over the rail of his hospital crib was transmitted by The Associated Press and brought adoption offers from hundreds of people. Art Toalston, a spokesman for the Richmond-based mission board, said the child's mother survived the Nov. 13 disaster and was located by Colombian authorities in a Bogota hospital. He identified the boy as 18-month- old Alexis Acuna and his mother as Maria Leyla Velandia. The two were reunited Christmas week, and the child is being cared for in a private home in Bogota while his mother is hospitalized. Mission board relief workers in Colombia could not immediately explain the discrepancy in names between mother and child, said Toalston. He said he was relying on Ellis Leagans, chairman of the Southern Baptist missionaries in Colombia, for information on the child. The child's father, Javier, died and a 2%-year-old daughter, whose name was not immediately known, is missing, Toalston said. He said the mother is being treated for an injury to her left leg suffered in the mudslide triggered by the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz, about 135 miles northwest of Bogota. The mud inundated the mountain town of Armero, where the child's family lived. An estimated 23,000 people died in the disaster. Toalston said the four members of the family were together in their home when the mud hit. The mother held onto Alexis and remained near the father, but their daughter was separated from them. "The mother was still with the child in the aftermath and was able to nurse him until they were rescued" two days later. "The husband was near the wife in the mud ... she Lo»t-Found-8trayed 45 LOST: 300 Block of Missouri, three year old black and tan German Shepherd, collar and name tag- "Duke"; and four year old Collie, collar and name tag- "Cassle". Toalston said details of the rescue were unclear, but the mother and child apparently were lifted from the area by helicopter. The child was taken to a hospital in Ibague, where his picture was taken Nov. 20 by a photographer employed by the mission board. The photo was made available to the press. Veterans fear band leader was victim NEW YORK (AP) — Two Royal Air Force veterans say they fear bombs they jettisoned over the English Channel after an aborted World War II mission may have accidentally downed the aircraft carrying famed band leader Glenn Miller. According to a report in Tuesday's The New York Times, the navigator and the pilot of the RAF bomber said they saw a Norseman aircraft fall into the channel below them as the bombs exploded on Dec. 15, 1944, apparently knocked from the sky by Shockwaves. Miller was flying in a Norseman D- 64 that disappeared over the channel in foggy weather on that December day. At the time, he was a major in the Army and leader of the Army Air Force band. His plane had taken off from an airfield near Bedford, England, on a flight to Paris, where he was to give a show. Officials reports on the disappearance indicated his plane may have been disabled by ice on its wings. The bomb theory was first raised in public last year by Fred Shaw, the navigator, who now lives in South Africa. However, it was discounted on the grounds that no RAF plane was in the air that day because of the poor weather.
