Injuries force school to cancel games MOUNTATNBURG, Ark. A high school football team canceled the rest of its season after running out of healthy players. Mountainburg is down to 14 players and will forfeit its last three games.

"It's the hardest decision I've had to make," said coach Tom Harrell, whose team was 1-6. "I never thought we would be faced with this situation." Quarterback Jeff Hampton is the only healthy remaining senior, and he was the fifth quarterback the team used this season. Pittsburgh team outscores opponents 477-0 in regular season PITTSBURGH Some perfect seasons are more perfect than others. Take the Perry Commodores, who shut out all nine of their regular-season opponents. The Pittsburgh City League school beat Westinghouse 67-0 on Friday night to become the first Pennsylvania high school team in 43 years to finish the regular season without allowing a point.

The last Pennsylvania team to accomplish the feat was East Pennsboro, near Harrisburg, in 1959, which held 10 opponents scoreless. Perry is the 14th Pennsylvania team to finish the regular season without giving up a point. Perry has outscored its opponents 477-0 after allowing just six points in 2001. Westinghouse drove to the Perry 8 with 40 seconds left, but comerback Mike Reid forced a fumble and safety Kenya Venson returned it 91 yards for a touchdown. The Times seeks basketball information The Times asks that area high school basketball coaches for boys and girls teams send 2002-03 schedules and rosters.

Only a junior, the 6-foot4 Shannon has "developed an understanding of playing the game. I see a toughness that I didn't see in him last year. In crunch-tinie situations, I see that he wants the ball," said assistant coach Chris Thomas.

"1 see the same tiling in Antonio as past receivers." Lucky coach, considering Shannon had initially planned to focus only on basketball (he's stalled at center since his freshman year), thinking he wouldn't be able to "hang with the people. I liked (football), but I was focusing more on basketball. But after I watched them my freshman year, I realized, that with my size and speed, that I could do it. "When I played my sophomore year, I liked beitig out on the field and all the lights; all the fans and family come out to support us. You feel real good when you make a touchdown; it just feels really good.

"Now I like football better." Thank goodness for Ms team, then, as Shannon is its leading receiver with 35 catch- es for 506 yards rushing and five touchdowns after seven games. "We're blessed with a lot of great athletes," Thomas said. "We have a lot of tall kids that can run. We've produced such great receivers; maybe it's the water." As small a town as Mansfield is, perhaps there are elementary and junior high school students who religiously attend games to get just a glimpse of Shannon. Most of the athletes know of past receivers who have played: Thomas grew up watching Marcus Carter and Floyd Turner; Shannon grew up watching Chris Hill and Thomas.

Somewhere out in the stands on Friday nights is a little boy who will one day become a Wolverine, and say, "I remember watching Antonio Shannon play. Remember when he It's not too possible that Turner, Northwestern, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens. Mansfield head coach Dale Morvan said the coaching staff was a bit worried about Shannon at the beginning of the season because "we thought he didn't like a lot of contact "But we figured he could catch the ball and catch it consistently. He runs patterns well and he catches extremely well. He's getting faster, getting stronger.

He has some of the best hands I've ever seen. He has great vision to find the holes in the defense and he's getting better week in and week out with blocking." His improvements probably come from his two-a-day practices. It's not the team he practices with twice, though. "Every day after practice, I go home and do the exact same tiling," said Shannon, who dons a gold-plated tooth with an engraved letter 'A'. "I run.

Eft weights and do conditioning." Overall, he said, he's happy with what he's doing; he believes in the coacliing philosophy in producing great receivers and with one more year of glory, and hoix'fully free of injuries, Shannon has his eyes set on a wiiming record. District? State? "All of it" he said. Beverages Maybe that should be expected from a guy who also plays linebacker. All this info bodes well for the Panthers. Postseason is not out of their reach this year, but missing the playoffs wouldn't make 2002 a failure.

It's already a success for Parkway, which has never been a football power. Everybody whispered that Gatlin was going to his demise when he k-ft the comfort of Bossier for the tough task of making miracles. His predecessor, Ray Doyle, is an excellent defensive football coach and a good man. but every coach faces his own set of circumstances and Gatlin has tapped into something special. Maybe it's tlie passing game that has Parkway players and fans excited and winning football games finally.

Maybe it's the cool Beverages. Brian McCallum is The Times' preD soorts editor. Parkway discovers two Shannon has hopes of that happening. Although he does want to attend Louisiana Tech to play ball and study physical therapy, he appears reserved in his accomplishments. He's quiet, smiles shyly, but he's focused.

"Most of our receivers left and it was me and Keith Phillips," he said. "We had to pick up the slack from most of the seniors that left They were some pretty big shoes to fill. "There have been a lot of receivers coming from here. A lot went on to the NFL and had a good career." The receiver list includes last year's star Josh Odums, now a receiver at Louisiana Tech (where Shannon has his sites set); Thomas. McNeese; G-drick Handy.

UNLV; Hill, LSU; Spencer Heard. Louisiana Tech; Carter, IiU; Albert WeDs, Grambling State, San Francisco 49ers; and refreshing a master of the quarterback position this season. I last saw him against Bossier, and I remember him throwing only one pass that remotely had the chance of being intercepted. And it wasn't Beverage doesn't have the touchdowtis-to-interceptions ratio that Holloway has tliis year, but the two do have one tiling in common. Receivers.

Beverage completed passes to eight of them against Springhill. They dropped fewer passes than you would expect of high school athletes, and they all moved well after the catch. It's something HoDoway has had to watch develop, but Haughton also has a number of players who can catch and run. Devondric Tezeno is the guy at Haughton, but Chuck Beverage has another smooth Beverage he relies on. His brother, Chad Beverage, is similar to Tezeno in his knack for not only catching the ball but powering through defenders for extra yardage after the catch.

The Panthers and Bucs meet rnday at p.m. at Parkway's stadium. Bucs quarterback Seth Holloway is the k-ading passer in local high school football. He has completed 129-of-224 passes for 2,240 yards. He's thrown 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Parkway quarterback Chuck Beverage is 97of-224 for 10 interceptions, nine touchdowns and 1360 yards. IO Holloway It would appear that the Chuck Beverage I watched on the practice field in August is missing. Pve heard Brian McCallum no reports of his disappearance, and the computer archive at The Times turns up no police reports of a missing Opinion person with that name. But the guy wearing the Chuck Beverage jersev Friday night against Springhill could not have been the same person. He seemed infinitely comfortabk' in the passing game, finding open receivers across the field and rarely forcing a pass into a spot it could not successfully penetrate.

He looked like a veteran quarterback. This new Beverage was running an offensive which is becoming increasingly familiar in these parts pass, pass and pass some more. Jim Gatlin, the new head coach at Parkway after years and years coaching defense at run-nappy Bossier, has discovered what Dennis Dunn of Evangel and Rodney Guin of Haughton already know. The passing game is the great equalizer. It's fun for the fans, and high school kids want to play it Dunn and his crew used it to build a powerful Evangel attack which is now feared from border to border of the state and beyond.

The Bucs are gaining rapidly. Like Chuck Beveragej Seth Holloway is a new quarterback this season, guiding his Haughton team to seven wins and a certain spot in the playoffs. Holloway is dissecting defenses this year. It's a change for him, because he had rough spots in previous seasons when lie was bothered by interceptions. That is the past for Hofiowav.
