True introverts are quiet, inwardly focused and reclusive. Extroverts are gregarious, socially active and sensation seeking. Most people fall somewhere in between, says Debra Johnson, the study's lead investigator. This is the first study to reveal the connections between activity of the thalamus and introversion and extroversion.

"We found more evidence that people might be shy or outgoing because of the way their brains are structured, not because of the experiences they've had," Johnson says. PET (positron emission tomography) scans revealed introverts have more brain activity in their frontal lobes and anterior, or front, thalamus. These areas are activated when a person's brain takes on internal processing such as remembering, problem solving and planning. Extroverts exhibit more activity in the anterior cin-gulate gyrus, temporal lobes and posterior thalamus. These areas are typically thought to be more involved in sensory processing such as listening, watching or driving.

"Introverts get more of their stimulation internally, whereas extroverts seek outside sources," Johnson says. United Methodist Church. Scalloped Battenburg lace trailed from the back waist to the hem of the train with a center medallion of pearls and crystal beading adding the final touch of elegance. She carried a elegant cascade of mixed, roses, delphinium and blue statice surrounding a stargazier lily.
