4C SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2005 High School Football: Week 6 THE TIMES shreveporttimes.com Homer hands Lakeside first loss in 1-2A opener 'The defense has really put us in position to score all yedr. We have to pick it up in the red zone. We haven't beat Loyola In several years. We want to change that next Friday night if we can." Glen Kyle, Homer coach point halftime lead cut to four with 3:12 remaining in the game and the ball in the hands of the Warriors at their own 48. Lakeside's defense played the bend-but-don't-break style Friday night at Ronnie G.

Beard Stadium, but it was the Pelicans who had to make the last stand. The Pelicans tackled Mark Myles who had just reeled off a 62-yard touchdown for a loss on first down, then sacked quarterback Walker Haynes on second down. Facing a third-and-20 at its own 38, Lakeside attempted a reverse to receiver Adam Cooper. Running to his left. Cooper had a small hole, but was hit and fumbled the ball.

Homer's Dennis Williams picked the ball out of the air and the Pelicans were left to run out the clock. "The defense has really put us in position to score all year," Homer nearly the entire first quarter. Two botched punts and minus-30 yards rushing combined left coaches, fans and players frustrated. Homer's initial points came courtesy of Lakeside. On fourth down deep in his own territory, Lakeside punter Coty David was forced to field a high snap and was tackled at the 6.

Pelicans running back Benjamin couldn't get in the end zone after four carries, leaving Lakeside with the ball at its own 1. On the Warriors' first play, running back Keon Taylor was tackled in the end zone. The cold snap was broken with a 45-yard desperation pass from Richie Casey to Jorogio Wilson late in the first quarter. On the next play, Benjamin showed off his power, broke several tackles and rumbled 25 yards through the coach Glen Kyle said. "We have to pick it up in the red zone.

We haven't beat Loyola in several years. We want to change that next Friday night if we can." Benjamin led all rushers with 69 yards on 21 carries and added 60 yards receiving. Myles had 66 yards on eight carries. "I had to get the ball," Benjamin said. "I gotta carry the team." Lakeside's defense was impressive, holding Homer to 241 total yards.

"We played well enough to win," lakeside coach Gary Cooper said. "But with two good ball teams, (los ing) happens." Lakeside didn't collect much on offense in the second half except Myles' long TD. The loss of massive running back Keon Taylor contrib-uted to that After Taylor departed early in the third quarter with an apparent ankle injury, the Pelicans were able to put heavy pressure on Haynes. "(Keon) is a big part of our offense," Cooper said. That gave them room to concentrate on our other guys." Maybe it was the cool temperatures, but the play was sloppy for middle of Lakeside's defense.

The touchdown and Benjamin's extra point gave Homer a 9-0 lead. Lakeside answered on its next drive after Adam Cooper set the Warriors up with a 50-yard kickoff return. Lakeside started on Homer's 41 and Taylor capped the five-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Midway through the second quarter, one play after Haynes was intercepted in his own territory by Wilson, Benjamin hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Casey and Homer took a 16-6 to the half. Lakeside made the Pelicans pay for their inability to score midway through the fourth quarter.

Myles scored on a nifty 62-yard touchdown run with 5:50 remaining in the game. Myles avoided tacklers with several inside-outside moves and helped the Warriors get within 16-12. Springhill downs N. Caddo By Roy Lang III rflanggannett.com HOMER The Homer Pelicans nave some work to do on their red zone offense, but those issues didn't stop them from collecting the first district game of the season against perhaps their toughest opponent in the race for the 1-2A title. Pelicans running back Termaine Benjamin scored a pair of first-half touchdowns and Homer held on for a 16-12 victory against the stingy, outmanned Lakeside Warriors who were previously unbeaten.

"This could determine who's going to win district," said Benjamin. "This is as tough a team as we might see all year." Homer (5-1, 1-0) drove deep into Lakeside territory several times in the second half but still saw its 10- Raiders ease past Chiefs for first win By Jimmy Watson jimwatsongannett.com Huntington's Henry Chandler and Frank Edwards took over in the second half to lead the Raiders to their first victory of the season, a 21-13 over Natchitoches Central. Chandler rolled up 112 yards on 19 carries and scored once, while Edwards had 80 yards and two touchdowns. "I never thought that it would take this long to get our first victory, but it took about five to six weeks for our seniors to step up," Huntington coach Mike Hlaym --r--vyr7 By Mark Barnard Special to The Times There wasn't anything strange about what the crowd witnessed in Calvary's District 1-1A football contest against Haynesville at Cavalier Stadium on Friday night. Someone in a Golden Tornado uniform named Evans was making plays, Haynesville used the same running attack that has won it a trophy case full of state football championships, and first-year Cavaliers head coach Doug Pederson was on the sideline, wealing a headset and watching a quarterback wearing a green jersey with the number 4 scrambling to make something positive happen.

Haynesville took advantage of a pair of long fumble returns for touchdowns by Demarcus Turner in the first half, and Cornell Evans rushed for 173 yards on 16 carries, leading the top-ranked Golden Tornado to a 40-3 victory. Two things did us in turnovers and penalties," Pederson said. "Haynesville is a good football team, and we were definitely outmatched. They have a great tradition, and hopefully well learn from this and turn these games into a great rivalry." Haynesville moved to 6M), 3-0 in district play while the Cavaliers slipped to 3-3 and 2-1. Turner returned fumbles 76 and 52 yards for scores, while Jeremiah Burns added a pair of 5-yard touchdown runs as Haynesville began to take control after the first 12 minutes.

The Golden Tornado scored on its first possession when Jeremiah Burns cashed in on a 5-yard run that made it 7-0 with 7:58 showing in the first quarter. Cornell Evans' 51-yard Green said. "Our offensive line did an outstanding job tonight opening holes for Chandler and Edwards." The teams were tied at 7 and the Chiefs Edwards Jessica UIghThe Times Calvary Baptist's Dallas Irvin (22) runs for yardage during first-half action during Friday night's game against Haynesville. The top-ranked Golden Tornado rolled to a 40-3 District 1-A victory. By Jamie Lunt Special to The Times VIVIAN Springhill's Lumberjacks drove away as the winners of the Stagecoach Skirmish against North Caddo Friday night when they topped the Rebels 32-20.

Lumberjacks coach Joey Pesses said Friday night's win over North Caddo (1-5, 0-1) was a result of hard work and a combined team effort on all parts. "Everyone played hard. We practiced hard, and we went back to teaching fundamentals and I really think it paid off," Pesses said. "We are a young team and we believe in taking it one day at a time. Tonight, I knew our kids could win the whole game.

In the past they have got down and dropped their heads. We talked to them about keeping their heads up and always believing in yourself, and that made the difference this week." The Rebels came back from 2W5 to tie the score at 20, but it wasn't enough to shake off the Lumberjacks (24, 1-0). Springhill had a 66-yard drive with the assistance of a 15-yard penalty courtesy of the Rebels. De'Antonio Mims ran in for an 8-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good, leaving the Lumberjacks ahead 26-20.

Three plays into North Caddo's next possession, Devin Washington fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Springhill's Theo Long. An unguarded Mims ran for his third touchdown of the night, clinching the game for Springhill, 32-20. Rebels coach Jerry Byrd said a few miscues a few fumbles and an interception stopped the late-game comeback his team was making. "We came out strong in the first quarter and then got our heads down in the second quarter," Byrd said. "Springhill made some mistakes and got some penalties that ate up a lot of clock time and our guys started stepping it up.

It was the ballgame you want 20-20 and what you expect from a game for North Caddo versus Springhill in the fourth quarter. "I thought we had some momentum going and then we made mistakes on plays where you just can't make mistakes. In close games like these, it comes down to a few close plays." run on the previous play set up the touchdown. Calvary answered with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by Jacob Woodie's 27-yard field goal. Evans fumbled the ensuing kick-off, giving the Cavaliers possession at the Haynesville 17-yard-line.

Jake Booty rolled to his left on the first play and rumbled as he was being tackled, and Turner scooped the ball on the first bounce and sprinted 76 yards for his first touchdown that gave the Golden Tornado a 14-3 lead with 2:38 left in the opening quarter. The Cavs struggled offensively in the second quarter, but managed to put together a nine-play march that ended on the Haynesville 39 after Nick Rome's pass from punt formation fell incomplete in the end zone with 4:42 showing. Aided by a pair of Calvary personal fouls, die Tors went 59 yards in eight plays as quarterback Dedarian Robinson scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown on fourth-and-seven, giving Haynesville a 20-3 advantage with 1:45 left in the first half. Gators wrestle win away from Tide were threatening at the Huntington 5-yard line near the end of the first half. But with no timeouts remaining, NCHS was stopped three times inside the 5 before time expired.

"That was the key play of the game in my opinion," Green said. "Laurence Sims and Jalil Agee made the big defensive stop for us on third down to keep them from going up by seven." Huntington (1-5, 1-2) took the lead at 14-7 on the second play of the fourth quarter when Chandler ended an 88-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge. SirDerrick Landreth added the 2-point conversion run and the Raiders scored again moments later to go in front 21-7. Natchitoches Central (24, 1-2) scored its final touchdown with 13 seconds remaining then attempted an on-side kick, but the Raiders recovered. never thought that it would take this long to get our first victory, hut it took about five to six weeks for our seniors to step up." Mike Green, Huntington coach lantone pass with 9:29 to go in the game and John Michiels' extra point gave Shreve a 21-14 advantage.

His catch came after the Tide tied the score with a 13-play, 77-yard drive that took 6:24 off the clock. The big play in the drive was a 19-yard pass from quarterback By Lee Hlller lhillergannett.com Captain Shreve took a hard fought 21-14 victory from Minden on Friday night at Lee Hedges Stadium to stay undefeated in District 1-4A. It was diminutive wide receiver Austin Tolliver who came up with the biggest play of a night that had many crucial plays. Tolliver wrestled away a pass from a Tide defender at the Minden 39-yard line for a 28-yard gain and the Gators went on to score the go-ahead touchdown five plays later. Tolliver took an 8-yard Andrew Ca- again when Gator defender Dusty Rust came up with the first of two big interceptions with a pickoff of a Cupples pass at his own 30.

With a 14-7 third quarter lead, Shreve missed a golden opportunity to go ahead by two scores but Calantone couldn't find a wide open Tolliver running all by himself. Minden forced Shreve to punt and took possession with just 3:09 left at its own 30. On a third down and short Cupples scrambled away from trouble and fired a pass to an open receiver but Rust came up and intercepted the ball to seal the win for the Gators. extra point. Shreve (5-1, 3-0) shot out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and was in Minden territory when it lost a fumble at the Tide 16.

Minden's only first half score ensued when Cupples hit Henix running all by himself for an 84-yard touchdown. The Tide picked up another Gators fumble and marched to the Gators 6. But a fourth-down pass was dropped in the end zone by a wide open receiver that would have brought Minden to within an extra point of tying the game. Minden threatened to tie the game Derek Cupples to running back Rust Brandon Walker.
