Others with sights on playoff bids Haughton can make the playoffs and perhaps even get a home game if the Bucs win out but the team needs to improve quickly.

Consistency doesn't come overnight of course, so making the playoffs might be an accomplishment for Haughton in 2005. Airline lias become a playoff constant, but the Vikings are not the team they have been recently, and District 1-5A is more balanced after the top team. Most likely district champions Nobody has beaten Parkway, so someone will have to prove it can be done before the Panthers are counted out of the District 1-4A race for the top spot Bossier could beat Parkway and win the district, but there isn't much room for another mistake for the Bearkats. Benton knows how to win district titles, but the Tigers have a tougher path this season than they've had in a while Most likely state champions Well, both Baylor and Vanderbilt were unbeaten before last week, so why can't Parkway have dreams? Beyond the Panthers, the Bearkats have the most potential for making a long playoff run because of the talent and experience on both sides of the ball and on the coaching staff. COIIV HtnOWELL FOOTBALL Cody McDowell kicked six extra points in six attempts along with a 25-yard field goal while also playing linebacker for the Tigers on Friday.

Airline's Cordaro Green (8) and the Vikings have a key District 1-5A road game McCallum a COLUMNIST bmccaliumgannettcom Haughton looks to keep pace Haughton needs to win this week to stay in the hunt for the District 1-4A championship. For a team with three consecutive district tides, that gives Friday's game special significance. There are only two problems. Bossier is getting healthy at fullback bad news for any opponent and the Bucs are struggling offensively. For years, Haughton had an impressive offense but got run over defensively and, thus, wasn't much of a deep playoff threat It's odd that the roles are reversed now.

The quarterback situation for the Bucs has been unsettled all season, while the defense is making plays. For Bossier, Corey George was a big contributor in Week 5 after battling injury. With Stevarrio Hogan and George in the backfield, this will be a good week for the Bucs defense to make more of those plays. Otherwise, the offense isn't strong enough to keep up. There are several things that will take the Bucs out of this game: turnovers, too many wasted offensive drives and big plays allowed by Bearkats backs.

That means the home team needs just about a perfect game. Bossier 34, Haughton 20. Airline vs. Ruston: This is a swing game for the Vikings and Bearcats. Somebody has to finish second behind West Monroe in District 1-5A, and it could very well be the winner of this game.

Airline needs to continue to see its offensive line improve. Against the big guys on the defensive line for Ruston, that is particularly important In fact, that matchup has the potential to cost the Vikes this one. Ruston 21, Airline 20. Mlnden vs. Captain Shreve: Mind-en's had a tendency to provide surprising results this year, both with a crushing defeat of Jonesboro-Hodge and a home loss to Parkway after building a three-touchdown lead.

The Gators should win this game, but surprises come in threes. Captain Shreve 17, Minden 13. Fair Park vs. North DeSoto: Playoffs? Are the Griffins thinking playoffs? Two more wins would put them in contention, and this is a winable game for both teams. North DeSoto 22, Fair Park 17.

Haynesville vs. Calvary: The Cavs handled their first big test well but lost to Ouachita Christian in a close game. This is also at home, so give the new guys a chance, but they'll have to do it with the passing game against the Tors. Haynesville 27, Calvary 21. Booker T.

Washington vs. Green Oaks: The Soul Bowl will draw a big crowd, as will BTW running back Jeremy Jefferson. The crowd around Jefferson is more likely to come away disappointed. This is one of those games that can't always be figured because of the rivalry, but the Lions should win. BTW 31, Green Oaks 17.

Byrd vs. West Monroe: The Jackets have pulled their share of surprises, but that isn't likely this week. West Monroe 38, Byrd 28. St Frederick vs. Grambling: The Kittens weren't supposed to be this good, but here they are winning games as in days of old.

St Fred is no pushover, so this could be entertaining. Grambling 29, St Frederick 17. Bearkats, Panthers, Bucs could all find a way to win the district title a Bossier isn't really a surprise team in the traditional sense, but one can never be certain how well all the talent there is going to mesh together. Despite a couple of losses, this group looks powerful on both sides of the ball Early struggles Haughton hadn't lost a district game in three years before this season, and the offense is where the team is slipping. The passing game has been one of the best around under coach Rodney Guin, but that has not been the case so far in 2005. Plain Dealing has a deeper roster than its had in a decade, but the Lions are winless. There were some tough opponents on the early schedule, but last year's team would have won a couple of games by now.

Perhaps some of the seniors lost were more important than had been thought Players of the first half This seems to be the year of the running back, and Bossier Parish has its share. Put RonDerrick Jackson at the top of the list The Parkway back wasn't even a running back when the team started the season, but he was moved there on the advice of assistant coaches and has exploded. His success has given the Panthers an offensive threat they haven't had under Gatlin. Stevarrio Hogan started slow behind a young offensive line, but he has picked up steam and is among CAMPUS JDSIIJODM Josh Johnson scored twice for the Vikings in a District 1-5A victory on Friday. He scored on a 97-yard run and caught a 74-yard touchdown pass.

1 By Brian McCallum bmccallumgannett.com For fans of pennant races, this year's battle for the District 14A football championship could battle the best of them. It's a new district without a set pecking order, and she of the seven teams are battling intensely for control. Any of them could conceivably win the title, and it likely won't be decided until the final week of the regular season. For Parkway, this could be the best season in anybodys memory. When die season started, coach Jim Gailin was likely having trouble sleeping thinking about playoff chances.

Now, he should be in, and getting a high seed and a home game is Gatlin his new concern. Whichever team comes out on top, it should be a wild finish. Surprise teams Speaking of Parkway, the Panthers have a chance to go 6-0 for the first time since the Rocky Mountains were formed. It has never happened. The last time the Panthers started 5-0 was 1985, and the team went on to lose the next five.

Ask Bossier about 54) starts. Parkway has won more than six games in a season, but never the first six. Josh Simon of Benton is on the verge of joining that group. Defensively, Kendrick Stewart is leading the Tigers in tackles by a decent margin, though linebacker Cody McDowell is a key player for the team as well when his experience and kicking duties are figured into the equation.

In line for a home playoff game Parkway should be considered agrven for the Class 4A field, and the Panthers can assure themselves of a home game with another two or lliree wins. Benton can do the same if it skates through Dis FACES iiiiuniraiioiGii PHIKIVItJIIOTIIIII Brad McCullough moved to center this season and is part of an offensive line that has blocked for 814-yard rusher RonDerrick Jackson..
